The landscape was bleak, which wasn’t terribly surprising, it was a reflection of the emotional state of its creator, after all . She could see nothing but gray stone in every direction, the same color as the slate gray sky. Of course, on closer inspection, it wasn’t really stone. It was something moist, spongy, and slightly warm. It pulsed like it was alive, and when it did the intermittent cracks and boils that marred the surface wept a dark, crimson liquid that remoistened the surface. It was, Fox noted with fascination, one of the most revolting things she had ever seen. That is disgusting, Av’ry’s voice noted in her head. “I thought you agreed to keep your distance.” Relax, I’ll back off when you get to the demon. You need my help to find her. You don’t know how to navigate a person’s mind. Fox rolled her eyes but said nothing. He wasn’t wrong. Just so you know, you are naked and covered in…ground blood? You might want to do something about that. She looked down at herself and cringed. It may not be real, but that didn’t mean she wanted it on her.

Vasýríon lunged at them—no, at Ashrah, she realised as those thunderous eyes burrowed into her. Quan Chi summoned another skeletal hand that cupped them all and delivered them out of harm’s way while Kia launched beam after beam of pestilence. Skeletons rose from the holy ground, shooting arrows with rotten bows. None of that would harm the Guardian, but the goal was another: to pester it and distract it from relentlessly hunting down its prime target. “Jataaka, go—” “You don’t give me orders, elbhyr!” the Nether-Touched huffed through her broad, moist nose covered in a pattern of ridges. Ashrah grumbled in response, even if, deep down, she appreciated Jataaka’s unwillingness to accept the command of someone she had just met.

His eyes cracked open less than halfway and looked right at her. He opened his mouth to speak, but his brow furrowed as nothing came out. Mana moved her hand from his face to his collar as he ran his tongue around in his mouth and swallowed hard in an effort to moisten his chords. After what they just went through, she would have loved to appreciate the spectacle more if only they weren't both actively in the worst shape of their lives. There were some… emotions, clearly. “Are… you okay? Have your wounds… Healed?” His throat offered them no more than a hoarse crackling of words, the exposure to all the smoke and flames apparent. “I'm okay. It hurts to move, but nothing's open anymore. I-I'm more worried about—” “I'm glad.” Mori opened his eyes more as he shook off sleep. Glassy, shiny. Tears. She realized there were dried streaks that cut clean paths through the grime on his face that started from his eyes. “Mori, are you okay?”

A blanket of silence covered the ships, interrupted only by the subtle swoosh of wings and the plop of blood on wood as it trickled down blades and claws. Nitara let her arms drop and her senses expand, searching the vessel for any rebels in hiding. Nothing; they were all there sprawled out on the deck, some groaning in pain, others unconscious, but most enshrouded by Envasar’s mantle. Perhaps some would live and find redemption after the Shadow Priestesses interrogated them. Nitara let herself believe that lie for all of a second. Once more, her crew had executed their mission to perfection. But no one was celebrating.

Take it one step at a time. What did she know? She could taste vomit in her mouth and on her lips, but her face and the carpet in front of her was clean. She looked back at her shoulders and saw a blanket draped over her. Someone had cleaned her up, was taking care of her. She wasn’t bound, or in a cell, so she wasn’t a prisoner. Ok, those were good signs. Maybe whoever was looking out for her could answer some questions. Fox tried to roll over to get a better view of the room, but the pain drove her back to the floor with a gasp. She heard footsteps to her right and a man knelt next to her. “Oh good, you are awake. I worried you would never come around, mistress.” She blinked up at him, struggling to remember the face and why she knew it. After an agonizingly long moment, it finally clicked into place: R’allick. And then, everything flooded back. Fox sat up, but the pressure in her head made it feel like it might explode. She breathed deeply, trying not to throw up again.

“Is there nothing in your …” He took a deep breath, taking drastic action. “… books that could help. Just … something.” Goody Tallheart placed her hands upon her hips, turning toward the bookshelves as though she had no idea how they’d got there. She scratched her head again and Parsimony, delicately, handed the hairbrush to the woman, giving Pippy a little shake of the head, which must be some secret sign reserved only for women, because Boulder had no idea what the head shake was about. Pippy, meanwhile had crouched down, tickling the black cat that seemed to think legs were there to lean against. Porkrind didn’t lean against legs. “I doubt it. They’re mostly treatises on various species of plants from around the world. A few books on anatomy. Folios from Laandan that …” She stopped, her features becoming bright red before rushing across to the book piles and dropping a dirty blanket over one stack of thin ones. Then she stood up straight, finger upraised. “There is one!”

On the quieter outskirts of the Great Crossing, Muffins the Cat and Kas the Crow, plus a new friend Stewpot (another cat) find their destination: an old, rundown apothecary.

They eventually ended up on the ground floor of a smaller road near the edge of the Great Crossing. The crowds were a bit sparser here, and the crisscross of bridges less ubiquitous. The side road was still blanketed in the shade of the towering buildings and catwalks above, though the soft teal light of magical street lanterns provided light to the scene. One particular storefront was decorated with pink paint, now faded and cracked. From a post above hung a wooden sign with the outline of a plant on it. There were plants in the windows too, though they looked unhealthy. Almost wilted even. If memory served, there also used to be a sign saying “Apothecary” nailed to the wall, though it allegedly had been pried off and stolen by another merchant for their shop. This was their destination. Matilda’s. Stewpot pushed against the wooden door, and with some effort, it opened, scratching the ground beneath. The door had no lock. Perhaps it was busted at some point, and none of this shop’s owners, previous or current, bothered to replace it. Or they didn’t have the money to.

Dec 15th: blanket

One of my favorite comfort moments between Farley and Caspen.
I make a noise—I don't mind to say that it sounds pathetic and small, because that's what I am now and I like to be so. I'm allowed to move on instinct, to cower from what they've done to me and be right about it. I like the way Caspen's wrist arches to curve his fingers into my spine as he strokes it up and down. I like his breath moving my hair when he tell me to "Cry." I like that he doesn't tell me not to, or that it's over now, or to save this for later. I like the way it feels that someone sees this and doesn't throw a blanket over it.

No one has it all together, I guess.” Rowan closed his notebook and slipped it and the prosthetic leg into the tote bag. “I mean, here the world has the gifts of Karan strength and Aenuk healing and all we can do is line them up and tell them to kill each other. Sure, the Aenuk healing is dangerous, but I feel like if it was harnessed the right way … Never thought it was right, them being locked up, conscripted to the army before they’re even born. They are people after all.”

“It looks like you saved the princess, though,” one of the magmaids said brightly. Oh, yeah. Gallara tried to quit feeling sorry for herself again and turned to the princess, along with everyone else. She got a good look at her for the first time: she was pretty and as short and broad as any other dwarf Gallara had seen, with big eyes, a wide mouth and broad nose, tanned skin, and dirty blond hair in a complicated but unkempt braid. Her pink dress was stained and torn up, but it looked like it had been really nice at one point. As disheveled as she was, she still had an air of confidence and poise, and she looked at everyone else with a surprising amount of respect. She looked physically and emotionally exhausted, but she immediately raised herself to a dignified bearing and said, “Yes. I am Princess Hallimae of Caldera, thirty-four generations from Hyxralos, first king of Caldera, and first in line of succession for the throne. Your help this day will not go unremembered. And … uh …” She slumped, rubbing her head. “Ugh. Damn. Can we pretend this part didn’t happen, please? It’s been a rough week or two.”

Writing snippet: “C'mere and take a look.” She sighed as she padded over and sat heavily in the dirt, reaching her arms back to cushion her head as she lay beside him. “What'm I lookin’ at, Micah.” He pointed up. “See that square with the line off to one side? And the smaller one that looks like it above?” She squinted and shook her head as a thin veil of clouds passed over. He took a long look at her, then moved closer, positioning his head next to hers and taking her hand. He waited until the clouds parted, closed one eye and held up her pointer finger, encircling the rest of her fist in his. Then he traced the stars. “That,” he said, voice low, moving her finger along the path, “is the handle and the bowl.” Their hands dipped down together, hard lines that cut across the midnight blue. “And this here”—he glanced at her—“these two that’re right next to each other, they point in the direction of the North Star.” She took over, stretching an imaginary arrow to the first star they led to. “Okay, and what does it matter?” He released her hand gently. “Well, that's how you can navigate, if you're ever lost.” He paused and moved back into his own space. “In case anything ever happens to me. You and Shrimp…that's how you find your way home.”

Since many generations usually share a home, everyone care for each other. Grandparents care for kids when the parents are working and older kids and parents take care of grandparents.
There's also parts of the priesthood dedicated to elder/child care.
