It was like he could feel the weight of the earth pressing down on him as he gasped for nonexistent air. His ears were buzzing, muffled noise. He couldn’t breathe. A gentle hand on his shoulder made him gasp and jerk away in surprise. “Poe?” Annie said, for what had to be at least the third or fourth time. He only shook his head, struggling to get his lungs to fill with air instead of what felt like empty vacuum. “Poe,” Annie said again, kneeling in front of him on the floor. She reached out to take one of his shoulders in each of her hands. “I’m here. I’m here. Focus on me. Can you breathe with me?”

From the opening page of my WIP Gun Feeling
It was a comfortable life, but not particularly fulfilling, and it left me with a lot of free time to wander around the big, empty house that I thought of as more George’s than ours. George was an investment broker who struck a run of lucrative real estate deals in the late 1990s and rose from lower-middle-class to upper-class over the course of a year. George was rich. Our garage had four cars in it, and our house had three more bedrooms than we needed. He owned a home in Costa Rica that sat empty, waiting for the off chance he might need to live abroad, for whatever reason. He worked very hard to acquire things, but then never took the time to enjoy them once he had them. He took flying lessons and bought a Cessna that he never piloted. He just paid to park it at Harry Reid Airport. He learned how to SCUBA dive six years ago and has done it once since. He seduced nineteen-year-old me, convinced me to marry him, and then ignored me for ten years.

For Tokonus the moment was bittersweet. Seeing the sudden spark of hope in Aesus’ eyes made him smile softly. It was the portrait of suffering that decorated the Zhaly that pained him. There was nothing that Tokonus could do to right the wrongs of the past, but it did not stop him from wishing he could. The horrors Aesus must have undergone – the other empty cages helped tell the story of his fate as well. There was nothing good that could have come from the evil of this dark crevice. Was this, too, the pain that the Ibo endured at the hands of Rodderick during their stay in his iron entrapments? “Pain come way... it come way from dis man... Thank you for dis joy...” “What happened here? Why were you locked away?” Othelia inquired.

Nicky wandered the house when Jeanette was out doing her voting thing, feeling more than ever like a man without a place. Technically, he was still a resident of the Great State of California, but the two years he’d been away from the ranch made for the longest spell of time he’d been away from Cali since being born there. Jeanette, with her persona of the Tourist, handled moves in stride without ever setting down new roots too deep. Nicky, cut off from his native soil, felt cast outside of space, time, and everything else. All he had left of the before times was his ’Burst, and he reached for her as a lifeline, his one touchstone in this big, empty house where Jeanette was killing time.
