More as an experiment than anything else, she took a deep breath. She regretted it. Half her fucking torso regretted it. Her arm regretted it for spite. She choked just to stop her body from moving rather than actually having anything lodged in her throat. Okay. Careful, shallow breathing. Fighting her body was not worth that pain. It also ruled out shoving herself up more to sit. Her eyes dragged down, and she spotted the remote near her hand on the less-injured side of her body. Good nurses. Smart. Her dominant hand was tied to all the pain right now. “They would. They never really understood the sacrifice we were making. The fact that to give our nation the knowledge it needed to stay dominant, we would have to become forever impure.” Kinekial was clearly extremely upset. “Listen, Kinekial, I-” “I’ve lived for over four hundred years, ‘Dizi. I could have been normal. I could have been pure. I could have died centuries ago after a life well lived. Instead I’m an undying, impure abomination!” She took a moment to breathe before continuing, “I don’t regret the choice I made. Not one bit. But it still weighs pretty fucking heavily on me, y’know?”

The tall grass of the meadow bends nearly in half with the strengthening winds, but in the corner of my eye I catch an odd shape like a wheel rolling through the blades—tsuchinoko, a kind of thick, venomous snake yokai that rolls by biting its own tail. When the wheel enters my range, I cut it down with a single stroke and keep moving, my katana flashing in the unnatural light. Another tsuchinoko comes up alongside Taro. In this formation, he’s forced to hold his sword in his non-dominant hand, but he bides his time until the rolling ring is nearly upon us, then strikes with lightning speed. The path in front of us is nearly clear. We’re going to make it in time.

[From my WIP: The Alternate History]
Narcissa watched him with his potential recruits, particularly the ones who responded to his sexual pressure. Since it was Lucius, that would have been practically everyone. Narcissa would perch in some prearranged, pre-spelled spot, and watch as Lucius cooed and complimented the poor second- or third-year until they were overcome by the attentions of the beautiful and intimidating prefect. "And they all want you to dominate them," Narcissa wondered after one such assignation. "Most do." "So it's their secret desire, it's what you promise them?" "Usually." He shrugged, halfheartedly. "It's just... easier." "Easier for *you.* There's no one with a secret desire to dominate *you*?" He leaned over to murmur in her ear. "Just you, Narci." The prefect's rooms were famously private, but Narcissa said nothing. She knew what he wanted her to do. "You're not going to freeze up on me, are you?"

Space was no place for #chivalrous behaviour. Out there, you didn’t let anyone go first, you kept your nose out of other folks’ business unless asked. Space was cold in so many ways.
That was before. Now, with an implacable Enemy, you helped as soon as you thought it was needed. Dylan knew.

To say that the game was, ostensibly, in a medieval setting, there was a distinct lack of #chivalrous behaviour. Few people helped others, outside the group tasks. If you were alone, you were really on your own, except for people like Rory, who would regularly stop to help people in a spot.
