Nat started humming tunelessly in the back of her throat. Any tone that reminded her of Shatrava’s light. The warm presence that kept her company all those nights in Med School, and guided her when Vola was being consumed by the demon’s poison. She breathed deeply again, and let out a soft vocalization, just like when she was a child struggling to remember the specific celestial hymns. Only now it came across more like The Cure than The Nine Praises of Shatrava’s Sojourn.

Vola looked sympathetically at her friend. “If she gives you shit, you’ll give her an earful. That’s what you do. You don’t get scared by authority. It’s one of my favorite things about you.”

Nat paused at that, digesting for a long moment. Once again, Vola had known just what to say. Much as it still stung, her friend excelled at de-escalating conflict. She’d do well at the bar. Wali had made the right choice.

“You’re right,” she decided abruptly. “Let’s go see the Witch. And when we get home, I’d like to make some Twilight Solace tea, get some pizza, and watch something stupid. Deal?”

The relieved smile in Vola’s eyes spoke volumes. “Deal. No anchovies this time though. Nothing with eyes that can stare at me.”

“Ma, she’s gone!” The shout met her ears just as her feet touched the river mud. The panic surged back and Marty broke into a sprint down the alley, hoping beyond hope they didn’t notice her before she turned the corner.

“MAARRRRTYYYY!” Ma’s roar echoed out the open window over the street, propelling her forward. Boots thumping in the dirt, she blew past startled pedestrians and dodged down an alley. Her heart hammered in her chest. With the gas mask and poncho on, she’d bought herself a few moments’ disguise, but there was no hiding the white dress underneath. Making a split-second decision, she dashed around another corner, dodged a cart, leapt over a dumpster, slid down a muddy trench, and splashed through a putrid puddle. The main sewer line was a few blocks ahead, the enormous broken pipe she’d followed Baya into the very first night. If she could get to the sewers, she could lose herself in the tunnels.
