“Ma, she’s gone!” The shout met her ears just as her feet touched the river mud. The panic surged back and Marty broke into a sprint down the alley, hoping beyond hope they didn’t notice her before she turned the corner. “MAARRRRTYYYY!” Ma’s roar echoed out the open window over the street, propelling her forward. Boots thumping in the dirt, she blew past startled pedestrians and dodged down an alley. Her heart hammered in her chest. With the gas mask and poncho on, she’d bought herself a few moments’ disguise, but there was no hiding the white dress underneath. Making a split-second decision, she dashed around another corner, dodged a cart, leapt over a dumpster, slid down a muddy trench, and splashed through a putrid puddle. The main sewer line was a few blocks ahead, the enormous broken pipe she’d followed Baya into the very first night. If she could get to the sewers, she could lose herself in the tunnels. And then what?

The Silversun Pickups song, like most of their music, had hit a chord with her anxiety. After everything she and Vola had been through together, was she really going to be so quick to believe the worst? The question warred with the hurt and shame still hovering in the wings. For a few moments, she and Ahn-Me opened boxes in silence, stacking plastic cases in neat piles. Behind the door, the voices rose and fell, the words unintelligible.

It was obvious, of course. Her eyes met the reflection in the rattling glass mirror, skating over it critically. Red-plaid skirt, Nekromantix tank top, black sports bra, red canvas sneakers, striped socks, and spiked collar. The purple in her chin-length mohawk glowed neon under the black lights. Her eyeliner had run and smeared into deep racoon eyes that made her blue eyes gleam. To the untrained eye, she might look like she fit in, like she belonged. But Nat knew better. She had tried to get into the mosh pit during the opener, Zombina and the Skeletones, but found herself forcibly moved to the side against her will. A few stray elbows and knees had skated past her, but nothing serious. In the end she made peace with dancing off to the side by the water cooler again, trying to play off her frustration. All her life, people had made room for her. She’d been paraded, put on display, and somehow she’d never noticed absence of attention until tonight. Was it because everyone thought she didn’t belong?

He’d had the misfortune of running into the witch once, and Doran was fucked to remember any of it. Not that there was much to remember. It was one of the first runs he’d done with Josiah and Ahroun, back in the day. He’d been driving the van trying to recruit more of Josiah’s little soldiers. He’d managed to coax about four or five of them into the van, when he swore he saw a tall pale woman with black hair outside that weird tree shaped shop. How she locked eyes with him from 3 blocks away he tried to figure out, but he didn’t have much time to do so, as he found himself then back at a busy intersection aiming across the southern bridge, headed back over to southern docks. That was at least a 15 minute drive, and the backseat was empty. Any memory of how was filled with a howling vortex of rage and holy wrath, that made him piss his pants, for a second time apparently. After that Josiah called off the recruitment drives. That was a week or two before Vola stumbled across their path.

Given new purpose and knowledge to rebuild her life as a healer. No longer the awkward wannabe punk scared that the Silks were about to abandon her. Vola heard what people called her when they thought Nat wasn’t listening. The Angel of the Silks. Still rail-thin though. Thinner than last month. With as much as she ate, that shouldn’t be the case. Her lavender skin was ashened and not as vibrant as it used to be. It was as if something was draining her vitality. Burning her out in a whole new way. Another question for later. Vola chided herself.
