You know…in school, some of the other students could rattle off whole chapters of the book and ace the exams, but then bomb the practicums because they couldn’t put together what they’d learned. Those ones didn’t last long in the program.” She’d survived purely because she alone had chosen the lower-caste hospital, Hearth of the Merciful Mother, for her residency. Instead of the steady proctor support and spoon-fed cases the other students enjoyed at the upper-caste Shatrava’s Grace Medical Center, she’d had to just….figure it out. She’d been forced to take everything she’d learned and synthesize it into something that cured people. And she’d graduated at the top of her class. Inanni nodded in satisfaction. “Precisely. The book contains some answers. But it is not a poorly designed puzzle hiding scores of ancient cures. It is one of the worst organized but most accurate collections of knowledge from across the eras. To decipher it takes skill and more than a little creativity, both of which you have in spades.”

“Ma, she’s gone!” The shout met her ears just as her feet touched the river mud. The panic surged back and Marty broke into a sprint down the alley, hoping beyond hope they didn’t notice her before she turned the corner. “MAARRRRTYYYY!” Ma’s roar echoed out the open window over the street, propelling her forward. Boots thumping in the dirt, she blew past startled pedestrians and dodged down an alley. Her heart hammered in her chest. With the gas mask and poncho on, she’d bought herself a few moments’ disguise, but there was no hiding the white dress underneath. Making a split-second decision, she dashed around another corner, dodged a cart, leapt over a dumpster, slid down a muddy trench, and splashed through a putrid puddle. The main sewer line was a few blocks ahead, the enormous broken pipe she’d followed Baya into the very first night. If she could get to the sewers, she could lose herself in the tunnels. And then what?

With the window open, her room was barely warmer than the outside. Firmly, she closed the window behind her and crawled over the mounting pile of laundry to the space heater. It rattled to life with a whine. Frowning, she surveyed her messy room. Laundry on the floor and bed. Her papers scattered everywhere. Books stacked in a pile on her nightstand. Vibrator conspicuously charging next to it. She should really keep this place cleaner, now that this was the main way they both got in and out of the apartment. It bugged her a bit that her room had basically turned into a glorified hallway - a cold hallway - but what else could they do?
