Here’s why you shouldn’t pull your punches as a writer:

A big part of the appeal of a book is how dedicated the author is to their idea.

That crackling energy only comes from compulsion, the true driver of creativity.

Restrain it at your own peril.

I can't write when my son's home from school, so here is a practice doodle I did of Thalia from Sigils of Malice, since the one where she's flexing in the tiger fur dress doesn't really represent her.

Her legs are wrong, I know, but I'll keep practicing.

#AwesomeCharacters

Knowing her limits is irrelevant when Thalia is the only one certain people rely on. She burns herself out and struggles to sleep because of it.

I think forcing limits on her would irrationally make her angry, even if the intention is to help her.
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

How is your character at knowing their limits?

Do they understand their flaws and work around them? Push through to their detriment? Completely overestimate themselves?

Do they improve or get worse in time?

Thalia's normal clothes don't actually show her figure at all. She's stealth buff.

#DecemberWorldbuilders

Unintentionally, I made it generational.

Thalia was raised in her family's business (the circus), and inherited its scraps with her cousins.

Technically Alderius' house in Sigils of Malice was his father's house, but Jorum stayed in the palace until book 2.
Hey there, #DecemberWorldbuilders! This week I'll ask you questions related to FAMILIES. Feel free to put it in the context of any characters you've made, or how your societies in general work. Today's Q: How do family units in general work? Are they generational homes? Who moves after marriage?

I hate AI, but I hate the witch hunters just as much for making art, an already paranoid profession, have to record EVERYTHING.

The burden of proof on the artist for their reputation, integrity, and career is just too much. Keep your justice boners in your pants.

#AwesomeCharacters

I'm not religious (raised Catholic), but my main characters are often religious.

Lamia: It's not specified what Selma is, but she's Christian.

Sigils: Thalia is casually a religious Omeran. Her upbringing alone makes her a sinner, but she tries in the beginning.
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

Is your character religious or spiritual?

Is there a god/gods in their world? Is their existence a matter of faith, or are physically present? Does your character believe?

Do they pray or perform rituals?

THE CATAPHRACT OATH is a swashbuckling clockpunk mecha adventure, in which a sword-swinging countess hires a disgraced alchemist to help her salvage the ancient war machine she needs to reclaim her birthright in a genre-bending fantasy that owes as much to Dumas as it does to Gundam.
