I’d have no idea how to create something so perfect so small.” The light glinted off something dark and round, and Llew’s revulsion was overpowered by her need to look closer. Almost of its own accord, her hand reached out and picked up the tiny crystal; such a deep purple it was black except under direct light. Her mother’s blood had created red crystals. Llew’s own blood had generated deep red, and later purple crystals, when she’d become pregnant. “His son must be letting him bleed him,” she said. “This must be from Immortal blood.” “He’s more powerful than ever,” Jonas murmured.

Novel text beside the image of a man crouched to attend to an open fire: He returned home and went straight to his workshop and woke half a dozen spider-like flying automatons and one by one he directed them into his ‘goop’ cabinet, had them inject their proboscis down the narrow air hole in a rubber stopper and fill their back-mounted globes with the coagulation. With a focused thought, he raised his I-am-not-Karan barrier again, and instructed one of the metallic creatures to seek Kara, then duplicated that instruction to the rest, and added the command to inject the goop, then he stepped from his workshop, walked down the hallway and opened his front door wide. The automatons whirred out into the street, tasted the air for a few seconds, and then headed off in the general direction of Quaver. “It must be much like watching your children leave home for the first time,” Nilv spoke behind Braph. “Perhaps.”

today is my 28th birthday! as we all know, sharing artists’ work makes them very happy.

thank you for all your continuing support and newfound friendships this year, it means the world to me.
one very green painting of my OC, mysterious skeleton girl, posing down on her knee. she has unnaturally long limbs. she’s holding a fossilised ichthyosaur skull sword on her shoulder and is wearing weird clothes that make her skeleton visible like on an x-ray. there’s a spirit of a hare in the background, running around with its eye gleaming red. a digital painting with three characters from kingdom come deliverance games standing one before the other: lady jitka, hans and henry. first comes lady jitka of kunstadt standing with her back to us. she is dressed in a dark reddish dress with white rim that slightly opens her shoulders, and a white waistband. she has black hair and warm skin and looks very delicate. next, standing face to face with her but looking sideways, is hand capon, her almost husband. he’s highest of the three of them, dressed is almost all white, with yellow hues. there’s somewhat lost look on his face. he holds jitka’s right hand in his left one up, but it doesn’t look like he’s doing it willingly. behind him, almost lost to the background and to the figures before him, stands henry. he’s holding his sword in his left hand, wearing a red glove. the blade of the sword stays between hans’ and jitka’s shoulders, not letting them come closer to each other. henry’s face is barely visible behind hans’ shoulder but he’s looking at jitka. not with hate, not with jealousy, more with acceptance and awareness. henry’s holding a wreath full of flowers and a red ribbon in his right hand. hans’ right one, instead of holding jitka’s, has found the wreath without having to look, and his and henry’s finger are touching. jitka knows. she’s looking down, trying to reach them with her fingers, but alas. that heart is already full. there are herbs’ silhouettes in the background. according to the list of plants with symbolism on wiki, here’s their meaning. astragalus for hans (your presence softens my pain), heliotrope for henry (emblem of faithfully devoted love), and rue for jitka (regret, sorrow, repentance, grace, clear vision , disdain). three sketches of my beagle, Bucky. he’s posing, asking for snacks, eyes wide and begging; he is lying curled into a ball, eyes sad like no one loves him (LIES); and he is lying on his side, stretched out, his ear thrown back. digital drawing made in heavypaint. it’s a simple bright and sunny mountain landscape, with white clouds and greenery and flowers. a girl is standing in the grass, turned to us. she has long golden blonde hair, is dressed in a white shirt and red shorts and is holding a hat with a white ribbon on it in her left hand and a yellow flower in her right. she’s smiling, happy and calm, her eyes closed. two birds are flying in the distance. this is a portrait of my friend. i haven’t visited her in a couple years.

I learned to love him once before, Orinia had said when Jonas inquired after her feelings for Braph. Learning to love. Was that happy? He’d once done the same with Kierra. Learned. He would like to think they succeeded. He had been happy enough. Had Orinia been happy? He didn’t know. More importantly in this moment: what answer did Llew need him to give? Did she need to spend energy distressed, or would it be better to believe her mother happy with Braph? If Orinia truly was happy with Braph, she likely wouldn’t take too kindly to Llew and Jonas turning up to kill him. It didn’t feel a whole lot like there was a right answer here. “She looked happy,” he said, remembering the lingering kiss between Orinia and Braph. She had watched him leave the room like a woman well-versed in love. A woman whose hero had come for her.

But yeah, K’s right,” said Gideon, standing and stretching, “we need to boogie before the Turning.” “The what?” “Time’s different here,” Vee explained. “How long do you think we’ve been here, Tim?” “Umm,” Tim thought about it and was completely flummoxed. It felt like almost no time had passed, like they’d just arrived, yet he knew he’d talked for a long time. “Think that’s a trip?” Gideon grinned at Tim. “Go feel your mug of tea.” Tim walked over and picked up his drink. Two-thirds of it was gone, but the remainder was just as piping-hot as it had been when Kieran gave it to him. “That’s impossible,” he muttered. “No,” said Kieran, “that’s time in the Duskrealms. It moves in fits and starts, moments staying suspended then hours popping by in a blink. It’s always twilight here, always the between-time, but it occurs at dawn as well, not just dusk, and sometimes the shift from one to the other is rather jarring. We call those abrupt leaps forward a Turning, and once you spend some time here you will learn to feel when one’s coming. There’s one about to occur, and I think it would be best to get you back before it happens.”

Turhmos may have been right to fight for the lives of Aenuks, but not so they could live in their cages. Cages Merrid and Ard had worked to free them from. He had denied Llew the opportunity to run from Brurun to fight for her freedom with a full-strength Jonas at her side. He’d believed that no matter how strong he was, he couldn’t stand up to an entire nation. And here he was, broken and weak, planning to stand against two.

Jonas searched the kitchen cabinets first. There were cooking oils and vinegars – malt, white, and cider – but nothing to dull the brain. Nothing in the wardrobe. The chest at the foot of the bed proved to be merely a repository for bed linen. He stood for a few moments, leaning into his crutch. Where else? Perhaps Ard had drunk in private, avoiding Merrid’s disapproval, and kept a stash in a shed. Jonas opened the front door, coming face-to-face with the reality before him. Llew sat at the foot of a tree, blood seeping from her for him, bearing the violent messages coming from the Taither tree alone. The others were gathering around her as the day progressed toward evening, trying to lift the mood, engaging in chatter and adding wood to the bonfire, helping Elka and Lyneth with dinner preparation. Llew sat alone with hands strung up, one pressed to the tree, the other held so the Gravinator could work, her eyes closed, her expressions rotating through bearing the pain with gritted teeth and suffering through sobs. And Jonas had been thinking of seeking oblivion, abandoning her entirely. What an ass … arse. Llew deserved better. He allowed himself a moment of self-flagellation, then resolved to be the better man he’d promised he’d be. Maybe not quite what Llew deserved, but the best he could give her.
