For a moment, I think he might be about to do something graceful, perhaps a pirouette. Instead, he turns his head down, points his antlers at me, and rushes me like a rutting buck.
This should terrify me, but it’s so ridiculous I almost laugh.
I dodge him and try to kick his leg out from under him, but it’s like trying to take down Michelangelo’s statue of David.

Ash gives me a long, slow blink. “You're unbelievable."

I grin weakly. “Would it help if I said sorry? Again?"

She scoffs and starts dusting herself off, the picture of someone clinging to patience by a thread.

"You never make it easy, do you?"

But before she can verbally annihilate me, the portal behind me flashes again.

First comes Poof, sailing through with all the grace of a disgruntled loaf, landing beside me in that very position, accompanied by a pitiful whine that very clearly translates to "Why are we on the ground, you walking catastrophe?"

I let out a nervous chuckle and try to reposition myself into something resembling a casual seated pose, trying to salvage this situation, even though my dignity is bleeding out somewhere in the grass.

Poof, the fluffy ball-shaped animal familiar of Veyla (the FMC in Star*Relic). She has white fur, dark purple eyes, and a long, fluffy tail. She transforms into a large saber-toothed tiger mount form when needed.

Floons, the species Poof is. I designed this card for the Elemental Tides card game included in my WIP story.

Maybe, just maybe, romantasy is oversaturated with white authors who only write straight romance. That’s why people think the genre is boring and unoriginal. We need more diverse romantasy. More bipoc romantasy authors. More stories with better writing, higher stakes and tension!

Spencer stared into a pair of large black eyes, gleaming with equal measures of intelligence and mischief. He blinked. Long dark lashes blinked lazily back at him. The lady had a smell about her, not unpleasant exactly, but distinct. A bit like wet wool and lanolin. And then she made a trilling sound that was stuck somewhere between a donkey’s bray and a sheep’s bleat.

“I feel like the name marsh mule is deliberately misleading,” he complained to no one in particular.

“Don’t listen to him, Heather.” Molly scolded Spencer and scratched the long necked pack animal behind her ears, which swiveled contentedly from one side to the other. “You are magnificent.”

Magnificently hungry, Spencer thought as he deftly dodged the marsh mule’s questing lips reaching out to nibble at the edge of his hat. He stooped over, keeping one hand firmly on his headgear while he checked over the cinches and straps holding their gear into place. Bruce and Wren were still bickering in an idle sort of way, quibbling without any real heat over the details of how to proceed.
