the proximate reason i post here — beyond the fact that i like a lot of you and enjoy reading your thoughts and jokes and observations — is that this is a non-algorithmic platform where people share lots of stuff and people read what is shared. that's still valuable even if it doesn't "influence!"

IMO it's FOMO on the AI bubble and the perceived need to pander to the financial analysts who set expectations for stock market performance.
Microsoft has "invested" over $13 billion into OpenAI. Why? Great question. But it's definitely not because the AI products out there right now are popular or effective.

I would say that you have to train yourself to focus on the actual people who care about you & who you care about/respect. Also you have to really live into your values. Both of those things will help you weather the opinions of strangers. I think that's different than not giving a fuck.
It takes training and conditioning to not give a fuck what people think. Contrary to popular belief, even if you’re born with the ability society and peer pressure will slowly make you give a fuck. You have to unlearn, recondition, and focus.

Not giving a fuck takes practice. Go practice.

This is per inhabitants which isn't the relevant statistic for making driving more safe. It's per mile driven where we're much closer to our peer nations.

Of course your data is a good argument we should move away from driving, but it doesn't support your statement.

There's some books I've read enough times that I'm kinda sad when I think about reading them because I feel like they're in my head already and there's just not much point.

I'll post more on this over the weekend, but this is a huge development. For the first time, Portland's Council would be formally exercising its charter-given oversight responsibilities. Spoiler alert: this is exactly the right way to do it.

Given the urgency, this was filed as a Nine-Twelfths agenda item for Wednesday, December 17th. I need nine Councilors to approve this. If you want Council to exercise its oversight powers in this matter, reach out to your Councilors and ask them to sign the 9/12 request.

Thank you.
