I've had this experience, too, at rallies small and large.

I also think a lot about my grandfather, a career soldier who fought in both World Wars and retired as a Major General — and hope he'd be proud of us for standing up.

"The evil Jew is funding the entire US left" is a piece of rank, obvious antisemitism that we have just collectively decided to accept in public, because IOKYR.
Ernst: "I think it is extremely important that we look at who is funding these protests. We have to get to the bottom of this. It could be the usual suspect -- George Soros."

I don’t have a very artistic eye. I’ve always had trouble framing photos. I’m trying to take more time to look at different angles and zooms so can snap a photo I’d like to look at. Here are some recent efforts.

Young Republican private texts are filled with deranged racism, sexism, and a fetish for violence, yes, but do you know where else you can find people on the right talking like that?

X. Reddit. TikTok. YouTube. Pods. Blogs.

This is just who they are, there's no f'ing revelation about it.
There's a community college in Colorado that keeps advertising a job for an astronomy faculty. I get so excited each time I see it because that's, like, IDEAL. But every time I click it the body of the job ad says it's for an adjunct position. This is why I have trust issues.
It's that time of the month when I realized that I spent way too much time reading up on the topic of my monthly lecture and now that I've read a bunch I realized that really I read the wrong stuff and now I have to rush to get the lecture done. Every month, like clockwork 👍

“what point was he trying to make” feels like a pretty obvious follow up question
Q: What does it say that president released a video of him pooping on the American people?

MIKE JOHNSON: You can argue he's probably the most effective person who has ever used social media. He's using satire to make a point. He's not calling for the murder of his political opponents.

my woke take is that entirely too many people feel entitled to the benefits of a social contract while not feeling bound by the responsibilities of said contract

Conservatives don’t know what satire is, it’s a word Rush Limbaugh taught them to say whenever they can’t justify or defend something bsky.app/profile/atru...

The only excuse Lois Lane has for why her interviewing Superman isn't unethical, despite their romantic entanglement, is that it would be even more unethical for the paper's other top reporter, who is Superman, to interview himself, yet she cannot say this. This dilemma should be taught in J-school.

Lol there were like 1500 in *Wooster, Ohio* on Saturday
Here's a gift link to the New York Times' coverage of the initial Tea Party rallies in April 2009 which inspired the media to treat it like a massive movement.

Check out how tiny the crowds were:

Philly: 200
DC: "several hundred"
Boston: 500
Austin: 1,000
Houston: 2,000

The networks took the much smaller Tea Party movement so seriously they broadcast a Tea Party rebuttal to Obama’s 2011 SOTU on top of the normal GOP one.
Reminder: We spent YEARS reading thousands and thousands of articles on the Tea Party and how it was a true expression of the American people's will, and it never mounted anything nearly as big as Saturday's No Kings rallies. [1/3]

Failure to return the shopping cart to one of the cart returns if you are able is a sign of someone who does not value the social contract.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

A nationwide backlash to AI data centers is brewing.

And for good reason: while AI enriches Big Tech CEOs and props up the stock market, data centers are sucking up communities’ water and power.

When the AI bubble bursts, the rest of us will be stuck holding the bag. Be warned.

Could not be clearer that we’re in a moment of almost universal elite rebellion against any kind of restriction or limit. You saw this shift in all the rhetoric too; Trump I was all about the little guy but everyone dropped that and started talking about grindset and being “aristocratic.”
one interesting thing is the collapse of mass support for trump before he took office. his in-person events were sparsely attended. his conventional fundraising (donations in the dollar to thousand dollar range) was more or less nonexistent.

Trump I was a grassroots phenomenon. Trump II was elite.
Republican rhetoric all week was clearly aiming to either depress turnout or inspire visible maga pushback. Neither happened and the press doesn’t seem particularly interested in exploring the implications of that.

I scrolled through the @1stforall.bsky.social's gallery of print front pages for local coverage of "No Kings" protests. Here are some of the standout papers, starting with the Daily Sentinel of Grand Junction, Colorado:

The "tactical frivolity" of dressing up like a giant penis is so next level here because it perfectly illustrates just how absurd policing is.
#NoKings event in Fairhope, Al.
A woman was arrested for "lewd conduct" because she was dressed in penis suit with a sign that said "No dick-tator"
3 cops on a 53 yo woman.

I don’t have kids, I don’t want kids, I don’t particularly enjoy being around kids. But let me be very clear and as unambiguous as possible: I STILL WANT MY TAXES AND SPARE GOING TO FEED KIDS, YES, 100%, YES.
Let me go on the record: as much money I have, whatever I can spare, I will ALWAYS want the extra to go to feed children

Something maybe worth noting is that all the frog costumes and signs and good-natured memeing came about because a wide spectrum of Americans saw someone in direct, brave confrontation with ICE—getting pepperballed and standing their ground—and thought “that’s awesome. That person is a hero”
