Super interesting reporting on Palantir‘s efforts to be used in Swiss governmental services and the military. They decided against it, because they worried Palantir was giving information to CIA and NSA and feared a loss of national sovereignty.

It appears 🇺🇸 is stepping up their rejections of European tourists at the border, following reports of tourists being turned away because they criticised Trump or Israel on social media.

Now Europeans will have to submit 5 years of social media history.

The trick is to place sleeper bots in all kind of online communities and have them engage with the normal community content, but come election (or whenever political topics pop up) they deploy their programming.

I buy the Cabaret theory of modern politics: current right wing politics was, once upon a time, a thing elites sold to rubes while merely pretending to believe themselves while they pursued wealth, but now the True Believers are actually in charge and acting on sincerely believed insane nonsense.

A college student complaining about a grade on a paper is not national news. Not even close. The details have minimal import outside the class itself.

Well-funded political activists targeting profs and TAs—in this case because they're trans—with the help of elected state officials? National issue.

Since AI slop is again all over Scientific Reports, a thread on the economics of grey-zone publishing.

Why does slop keep getting published? What does it mean for science? How can we stop this?

This is the sort of action we urge funders and scientific governing bodies to take: change incentives, shift financial flows away from big publishers and fund open alternatives instead.

Well done CNRS, let us keep up action to stop the drain of scientific publishing!

Being among the first interrogated and ultimately fired by DOGE, I certainly felt we were facing the business end of a right-wing conspiracy theory 🧵
DOGE was not a money-saving effort. It was an effort to chase down and prove right-wing conspiracy theories. They went after USAID to prove conspiracy theories about foreign aid. Then they went after SSA to, again, pursue conspiracy theories about Dems paying "illegals" to vote. 1/2
All DOGE accomplished was purging critical government staff, handing private data to outsiders, and sentencing thousands in developing countries to death by gutting USAID.

I don’t say this lightly: if there were any justice in this world, the people responsible for this devastation would be in jail

In 1990, 943 million people in China lived on less than $3 a day measured in 2021 dollars – 83% of the population, according to the World Bank. By 2019, the number was brought down to zero. In the US more than 4 million Americans live on less than $3 a day, 3x as many as 35 years ago.
China has brought millions out of poverty. The US has not – by choice
Despite the US’s economic success, income inequality remains breathtaking. But this is no glitch – it’s the system

- crisis talks at G20 among European leaders being planned
- still no clarity about Trump's position on it
