"If [GOP] recent actions are any indication, they do not care about a majority of the electorate — they care about bestowing favor on America’s wealthy, privileged class, and that includes themselves and their families."

"When they do manage to govern, they make staggering and dangerous mistakes."

If you're all about saving time, then AI looks a lifesaver, unless you didn't check the quality of the work afterwards. I'm just impressed the judge recognized they were fake, as the lawyer didn't.
Fake AI citations get Maryland lawyer called out in court
Adam Hyman, a family law attorney in Bel Air, submitted a brief that he was unaware contained citations that artificial intelligence made up.

This headline is obviously ultra-simplified but at some level it's correct, my retirement account is at the mercy of the stupidest, most gullible prats (acting collectively on the belief that everybody else is stupid) in the world

“I think China is using it in a very, very geopolitically savvy way, taking advantage of America’s stupidity and regression back into a petrostate,” Tim Buckley, director of Climate Energy Finance, a Sydney-based research group says, adding: “China just wins. America has abrogated the playing field”

This is a legitment concern. I have a friend who delayed his ceremony because of work and by the time they got round to it, they (the feds) lost his paperwork. As he was moving his family to the UK (to be closer to aging parents) they had to abandon his case.

"We regret any inconvenience this may cause," the notice said.
Around me at the office, disappointment quickly turned into confusion….A few people seemed genuinely frightened, wondering how the delay might affect their work, lives & plans.

So if I've understood this correctly, the Indian Navy is congratulating the US Navy's 250th birthday (and my 55th) via a US representative? Or, more realistically, someone search in his office for ships in Wikimedia and didn't check what navy was associated with them before posting? 🤦‍♂️

Serving in the U.S. Navy was one of the greatest honors of my life.

After being forced to put the money back, instead of directly giving money to the four programs that are part of a national network helping students who are deaf and blind, Dpt of Edu has instead rerouted the grants to a different organization that will provide funding( cynic says what's the grift?)

Its also why in Maryland you can't generate enough solar power for your whole house, they want to make sure you'll be using the grid for some of it.

Gas companies usually don't make a profit on gas itself:they pass along the wholesale price to customers. Instead, utilities make their money by building new infrastructure, such as pipelines, and replacing outdated infrastructure. Regulators then allow companies to recover those costs, plus profits
Natural gas prices are low, but your monthly gas bill is up. Here's why
Gas utility bills are rising even though natural gas prices are down. That's because a much larger share of your gas bill now goes to infrastructure instead of fuel.

Bert had connections to everyone in the high energy physics community, and was also an amateur actor, something he used to do while at Berkley with Stacy Keach. Apparently Keach told Bert he was the better actor. "I knew he was lying" chuckled Bert but "but it was nice to hear." RIP.

Just heard that Bert Schwarzschild passed away last week in his sleep at age 90. He had been ill for some time. Bert was one of the longest serving editors at Physics Today, and one of the best editors I knew at taking what looked like a garbled mess and turn it into something worthwhile to read.

U.S. measles cases continue to climb, with outbreaks across the country
In South Carolina, more than 150 unvaccinated schoolkids are under quarantine after being exposed to measles. Across the U.S., total case counts could be even higher than the official number.

Here's an example of the devastating cuts Trump is doing to the science base. Halfway through a grant, NIH cut funding, so kids like this 4-year-old will have to stay attached to a giant machine to keep their heart going instead of a tiny device doing the same job inside their body.
This 4-year-old's heart is failing. A federal grant that might help him was canceled
