Fay is posting some very good tips on this subject!
Publishing is a business. Self-publishing is a business. One of the first steps in any business is doing necessary due diligence or 'learning' about it.

Yes, you can put your novel in the hands of a boilerplate formatting template and POD system. Should you?

Using stolen material. Stolen from writers and artists.
This series does not teach AI writing or content replacement. It focuses on workflow efficiency, analytics, and tools that support—never replace—human creativity.

YES.

Every time we are expected to say “AI has SOME good uses”, even though the kind currently discussed (the slop producing kind) is not the same thing as the “good at spotting statistical anomalies” kind, and that disingenuous bullshit is to try to make people shut up about the slop engines!
This is specifically about AI use in humanities disciplines within academia, which is clear from context- this crap is extremely harmful in that setting. Inevitably, people show up to be like "AI finds cancer cells tho".

NOT THE SUBJECT, and that conflation has been inflicted upon us intentionally.
You absolutely will not convince a bunch of historians and sociologists and whoever else is in this thread that you know more than we do about this and we should use it. I wish you AI enthusiasts would stop wading into our conversations. You have nothing helpful to contribute and are snarky.

I just saw someone yell “they’re just using it to generate ideas!”

And

I hate to say it

But if you work in the ART DEPARTMENT and you need a death machine stuffed with your colleagues’ work to give you ideas

Quit.

Any work made ineligible for the Nebula Awards by them disallowing slop and slop-assisted work was never eligible in the first place.

"There are legitimate uses in translation, research"

If you consider 30-70% incorrect results that poison neighborhoods with new cancers "legitimate"
I really don't know what anyone in the SFWA was thinking allowing gen slop into the Nebula Awards in the first place, but I'm glad that decision has been reversed.
Dear SFWA and surrounding industry:

It's a two-mailout kind of day!

Thank you to everyone who wrote in.

The Board wishes to share the results of two votes held this afternoon, with further amendments to our Nebula Awards Rules.

“Slop” is a perfect word to describe AI output and I default hear it in the voice of Ren Höek. SssuhLLOPPuh!!
Merriam-Webster’s human editors have chosen ‘slop’ as the 2025 Word of the Year.

#RIPRobReiner & wife Michele Singer Reiner. 💔
This is a huge loss in so many different, important arenas of life.
When it comes to the works of Rob Reiner, the word iconic doesn’t even do it justice.

Hey, and unlike a lot of places these days, they pay their writers! 😁❤️

Calling all writers: SUMMER IN THE CITY is now open to short story submissions!

We're looking for original dark speculative fiction stories where the city isn't just a setting, it's a character.

When I glance at your account, if I see an AI generated image or a pro-AI post--that makes me sad.
It's an automatic mute/block, no matter how great I find the rest of your account.

We need it. Not only are the classes full, but also concert halls, libraries - we've gone to a bunch of classical concerts this year as an antidote to despair and guess what - they are full. They were not as full before, but they are now.

"Humanities are shrinking" is artificially imposed top down.
"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe
