There is an actual life-changing conflict between WFH being cheaper and more efficient, an entire layer of middle managers who need to have meetings to feel alive, and the commercial real estate cabal that runs all cities. It’s going to get so fucking weird.
remote work is like birth control or UBI atp where there’s overwhelming research consensus they improve quality of life for people they apply to, yet access is impeded or blocked by the ruling class because the thought of marginalized ppl having rich full lives makes steam come out their ears
2. Rolling Stone is owned by a large media conglomerate, which is ending remote work across its brands.

My home is Portland, Oregon, ~1,000 miles from the nearest office, so this marks the end of the line for me at RS.

AOC: And they are able to radicalize a generation of young boys in particular, away from healthy masculinity and into an insecure masculinity that requires the domination of others who are poorer, browner, darker, or a different gender than them.

I have a PhD in narrative patterns and time with my tea this morning, so let’s talk about SCIENCE FANTASY!

Most people have heard of science fiction AND fantasy as separate genres, but science-fantasy as a genre has a more chequered history.

Things get fuzzy, so buckle in. 1/9

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

I notice this split a lot on social media: you can really tell who comes from a community that has been finding joy in the face of hardship for generations and who has had the luxury of feeling safe until so recently that they don't think anyone should continue to live until they feel safe again

I'm a bit of a dissent apologist for this reason

I understand the kinda nihilist dunks on them as meaningless, but i've seen too many dissents become majority opinions to think they don't have value--as doctrinal roadmaps, as mobilizing tools, as records of the truth when the majority lies, etc.
If going forward we ever fulfill the actual promise of our Constitution, the dissents from this era of #SCOTUS are going to be very important and influential.
i’ve slammed the first four of these books in the past month and every word of this is accurate
Today I review JACK OF THORNS, the first book in the Inheritance urban fantasy series by @poopraven.bsky.social.

"Jack of Thorns is only the beginning of what promises to be a wild - and very queer - ride."

god yes. democrats stop running for re-election when you are 79 years old
I like Ed Markey a lot, but I’d like him even more if he passed the torch to a progressive successor who can represent Massachusetts for decades to come.

Not a whit of hyperbole there -- this is *unbelievably* bad, truly shocking stuff. If you're a US citizen, you really need to hear this.

In her journal, Octavia E. Butler wrote, "My pen and my paper, they comfort me—at least a little. They allow me to scream into utter silence. They focus my thoughts, they permit me to act when no other action is possible.” Keep writing.

One reason I will never be rich is that if I had as much money as Elon or Bezos I’d make it my entire job to send life-changing sums of money to people who do shit like this. Your cat is cute? Here, have three million dollars
how happy we’d all be if this was all the internet was for

Remember, for every person doing frontline work(anything involving active confrontation be it frog protests or anything spicier and more kinetic in nature), there is a critical need for something like seventeen people doing rear echelon work of every skill type.
"So what do you suggest we do to fight Trump?"

Find people in your community who need help, and help them. We all have skills. Maybe it's giving rides to people who don't have cars. Maybe it's going to the grocery store so your immigrant or racialized neighbors don't have to when ICE is around.

Feeling the need to remind myself of this Ursula K LeGuin quote today:

"We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings."

My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.
So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

This is a good point
one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

MAGA Rage at “No Kings” Boils Over—and It Quickly Backfires on Trump
As Trump allies smear the coming protests, a good writer on MAGA skewers the absurdity of these attacks on large swaths of Americans—and explains why our best recourse will be to turn out in force.

Yeah, the 2000 election & the 2016 election
Was there ever a more epic press failure than the 2024 election
Thinking fondly of all the pre-election fact-checks that said we couldn’t possibly know whether Republicans wanted to get rid of pre-existing condition protections.
