BAM CEO Discusses Store Growth, Consumer Demographics In the latest issue of the Open Book podcast, Open Road ceo David Steinberger talks with Books-A-Million ceo Terry Finley about how their customers have changed over the years, the chain's growth, and what's selling in their stores—and what's not. Finley said that the biggest change in books retail over the past few decades is the customer. BAM's core demographic, he said, "was a 45-year-old woman, married with two children, college education, decent family income." Now, it's "much younger"—18-40 and majority female. The books that drive the retail market have changed too. While major tentpole authors like Dan Brown and John Grisham used to be the major sellers in-store, customers are no longer looking for one author, but many romantasy, BookTok, and other fiction titles. "Last week, the number one selling title in our chain sold a little under 800 units in 220 stores," Finley said. "Back in the day, that would have been five thousand. A new Dan Brown would come out and we would sell week one, easy five thousand. And we would sell over the life of that book tens of thousands. Today, Dan Brown is available at cost from Amazon, close to that in many other places. Now, we'll sell a lot of Dan Brown, but it'll take a lot longer and it won't be the tentpole. It won't be the thing that is meaningful this week." According to Finley, romantasy sales have "peaked" and "horror is the latest genre." Anime, manga, and graphic novels are also "a huge driver." Manga, he said, is the third-largest volume generating category, after fiction and children's books—up 40 percent over last year, which was up 20 percent over the year before. The boom is driven by the growth of anime in the US, like series on Netflix, and "amplified by these viral communities online." He says they are "way out front in market share" for manga titles, and that they have taken over for the Christian bookstores that have closed down in the South. The chain has a "huge Bible business," 60 percent of which are Bibles that they publish. They are also one of the few retailers that has partnered with PopMart, which sells Labubus. The chain, which is in "growth mode" according to Finley, has 220 stores, and opened 15 in 2025. Finley explained that it costs about $1 million to open a store, so their goal is to make about $2.5 million or more per year. "We're a private company, so I'll just tell you directionally we're doing very well," he said. "We wouldn't be opening 15 stores this year if we weren't."
