This is why I go nuts when people compare AI water use to agriculture or something. Do we need an overhaul of our systems? Sure! But humans need to eat and we don't need Garfield robbing sexy Pikachu at gunpoint. You're comparing apples to rubber chickens.
> People who don’t think twice about eating a burger or buying a new T-shirt are angry about LLMs and water because they are rejecting the entire premise that AI is worth the price of its water use.

i think this is what @anthonymoser.com commented on in another post & i agree

how much water does it take to disrupt the careers of millions of people? how much water does it take to make deepfakes of underage kids? how much water does it take to exacerbate people's mental health crises? is there a good number? is there an acceptable number?

my next question... Why didn't Wilsey consider that she was a single mother whose wages feed a child? Why did she pivot immediately to abuse? There is something unwell there

this is actually one of the major disconnects that Bernie Sanders has in his analysis of race and class

I’m not a huge fan of taking away people’s livelihoods just because they did or said something stupid but someone in a customer facing position getting fired for calling customers racial slurs is actually a perfect example of when a person should absolutely be fired
“Those of us on the left should be fighting to improve protections for workers of all races, and thereby for the betterment of people’s material conditions regardless of their views,” Arash Azizi argues:
Why the Cinnabon Story Doesn’t Make Me Happy
The left should be promoting working-class solidarity, not delighting in seeing workers summarily dismissed.

The idea of framing this vainglorious billionaire lot as modern day versions of the gritty, hard-bitten, working class, manual laborers who, for a pittance of wages, risked their lives and used their hands to make real the skyscraper dreams of the wealthy and middle classes is….lunacy.
I guess it's fitting that it's a reimagined, worse version of someone else's artwork

Oh & one more thing: outsourcing creative work to AI means outsourcing your curation of the universe to algorithms, pre-curated to make your work less unique, less expansive, less thrilling. You have the whole universe to choose from. Don't let nihilistic billionaire assholes choose for you.

I say this as someone whose entire job is finding the narrow use cases in which AI is actually useful:

All the fear about AI, all the reluctance to adopt it, is entirely legitimate, and a product of the fact that it's been foisted on the public with no consideration of its negative externalities.
I continue to have no sympathy left for whinging about how the public are rude about AI and feel threatened by it when the biggest players in the AI space have spent years very vocally and constantly *threatening the public*

This kind of thing absolutely kills most of the book sales that one might have from someone browsing the site. Every book now has to contend with the glut of AI slop and rip-offs that drown it.
On this page you'll find nine clearly AI James Gandolfini biographies that were published after mine.

It's absolute madness and authors have no power. Don't buy books from Amazon. Buy them from @mzspress.bsky.social or @bookshop.org or your local bookstore or even fucking B&N but not goddamn Amazon
