We ate this all the time when I was a hippie’s kid. It took me many years to appreciate it, now it’s in regular rotation. Mostly dried and canned ingredients, customizable, you could add meat but it’s very satisfying without it (1/3)
Photo of recipe from book: LENTIL AND BARLEY STEW ¼ cup butter ⅓ cup chopped onion ½ cup chopped celery 2½ cups skinned chopped fresh or canned tomatoes 2 cups water ½ cup dried lentils, picked over and washed ⅓ cup whole barley ½ teaspoon sea salt ⅛ teaspoon black pepper ⅛ teaspoon rosemary ⅓ cup shredded carrots 1. In a large heavy saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onion in it until tender. Add celery and cook five minutes longer. 2. Add remaining ingredients except the carrots, bring to a boil, cover and simmer gently 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Add carrots and cook five minutes longer or until barley and lentils are tender. Yield: Four servings. [my grandmother has hand-written “PUT IN LGE ONION STUCK WITH CLOVES” in pencil on the page]

A wedge of RED DRAGON cheese cut from a wheel in a grocery store display. The red dragon is the national symbol of Wales, the country this cheese, which is a cheddar with Welsh ale and mustard seeds (neither of which are noted on the label) is made in, but the grocery store label says “England”, an entirely different country with a long history of banning the Welsh language and discriminating against its speakers, a practice that brought the language to the brink of extinction. No, this is not the first time I have found this cheese, which is very good and you should try it, incorrectly attributed to the country whose citizens have made 4 of my 5 ancestral homes that still stand today their vacation homes, and then complained about it on social media. No, I don’t know why I, a fourth generation Welsh-American, am like this, but I once met a guy in a bar who said he didn’t know anything about his family history but his grandpa used to pound the table with his fist and say WE’RE WELSH, DAMMIT, so this is a thing, and I am grateful for it because it was my first small step in recognizing oppression elsewhere. Really, though, try this cheese, it is SO GOOD, mad at myself that I was so mad about ENGLISH CHEESE that I didn’t buy any
