A very important thread. When I was probably no more than 10, I saw this picture of the woman known as Harlow in the Philly Inquirer. A little babygay, I was shocked that such a glamour queen could live in my hometown and even more shocked to see her described as "a former man."

We Should Have Finished Reconstruction: A Brief History Of American Politics, 1865-2025
While the outcome should be clear from the plain text of the Constitution, the central project of this court and Administration, together, is to nullify the reconstruction amendments
The Supreme Court Friday agreed to decide whether President Donald Trump can unilaterally limit the constitutional right to citizenship granted to virtually every person born in the United States. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

I can’t get over how Barbie succeeded because it offered tangible ways for women and girls to celebrate each other (and dress up and go to the movies together) but studios thought it worked because it’s about toys so now they’re making like Bananagrams the movie

all the mass media conglomerates consolidating into one behemoth megacorp is an interesting business experiment to see how long an entertainment company can survive without making any good shows

they're exactly what they say on the tin. if it's not for you it's not for you but they are what they are (sentimental escapism)
I don’t understand why people attempt to denigrate Hallmark Christmas films by referring to them as “too cheesy”, as if that is a bad thing? I mean, have you *had* cheese? It’s not exactly the insult that you think it is.

Forty years ago, 90% of media outlets were spread across 50 companies.

Now, just 5 companies control 90% of the media market.

This consolidation hurts consumers and helps oligarchs. 🧵

also just on a personal note having worked at both WB and Netflix, I have no faith in either company and anything leadership says about a love of movies is a big fat lie. TCM (where I also once worked) leadership does their best to navigate bomb filled waters every day.

I really think we need broader reclassifications of what would legally be considered an SA or a harassment charge given what AI is allowing people to do and what this must be doing to the people who are its victims

I literally hate the concept of "consumer" and the use of it as a term now lmao

a huge part of the mess we're in is that there is nothing close to class consciousness, we just have consumer consciousness. People identifying as consumers over everything else.

there should be about 5 to 6 times as many magazines as there currently are for criticism and they should all pay on average 2 to 3 times as much as they currently do, and it should be easier to write for them. without that i think american literary culture is gonna continue to feel weirdly stagnant

The thing I keep thinking about, that is being overlooked in coverage of bad bunny’s dominance is that DtMF is not an isolated event. It’s a siren song for the diaspora and you’d be foolish to think he’s the only one doing that

LRT I don't really have the thoughts for this but something something politeness something something social cohesion

there's a diminishing concept of collective sociality which means no one owes you anything and almost 35% of this has to be due to the rise of intrusive scammers

underlying problem with a lot of pop culture and society generally is that people stopped believing that duty is a real thing
Man, remember when star trek knew it was a show about adults in the navy doing their duty as best they could see how, through a deep sense of devotion to cause and morality

he set up nonprofits to vaccinate kids in Louisiana against hep B

he knows exactly what this disease does, he spent much of his life fighting against it, and he knew exactly what RFK was when he voted for him

he has no excuse at all
