He/him. Left-wing history dad. Pro Popular Front, pro Sewer Socialism, anti borders. Français par mariage. Minnesotan in Wisconsin exile. Mostly posts bad history jokes and occasionally bad history not jokes.
Re-listening to @alanallport.bsky.social’s “Britain at Bay” in preparation for volume 2. His starting one chapter by introducing extremely vivid and horrifying accounts of naval warfare *before* revealing that it’s about the British attacking the French at Mers El Kébir is very effective.

The 4YO requested a pancake shaped like a t-Rex. She said “that looks more like a lizard,” a review I’m pretty happy with under the circumstances.

5 months ago we ended a wonderful year in Paris to move back to the US. It’s nice to be home in many ways, but obviously there is a lot we miss. Fortunately there are ways to recapture the magic (“Champagne Problems,” 2025)

Several inches of snow, a decorated Christmas tree, and a Negroni made partly with pine syrup from said tree. Happy winter, folks

I’ve reached “got snowflake projector to point at my garage for the holiday season” levels of Midwestern dad, and I just went out to look at it in a t-shirt at 11 PM before the big snowstorm starts

My annual Thanksgiving leftover savory pie stood upright this year (until it was sliced into, but we don’t need to discuss that)

I don’t need to think of the implications of this statement in terms of the politics of the Tsarist Empire, its treatment of Jews in the Pale of Settlement, and Miller’s own approach to minority population, because the whole thing is bullshit from the word go.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

Doing our annual Thanksgiving evening watch of Muppet Christmas Carol and the costumes and sets are genuinely so good, in a way that kind of depressingly shows how crap movies look these days

There’s a house in our neighborhood that does a massive Christmas light display every year, and their neighbor understands the assignment

A Thanksgiving highlight this year was my dad, who speaks no French, trying to explain the rules of football to my wife’s French cousin, who speaks barely any English.
ahh the annual Thanksgiving tradition of watching football with non ball knowers

Happy Thanksgiving, my most dad day of the year (he says, about to nap)

Imagining how people would’ve reacted to Lil John, Shaggy, and Busta Rhymes being in the Thanksgiving Parade 20, 25 years ago, how today they’re uncontroversially mentioned in the same breath as Elmo, and reflecting, as one does, on mortality and the inevitable march of time.

The friend who is in charge of mashed potatoes is using purple potatoes this year, and it’s like the Simpsons episode where Homer doesn’t wear a white shirt

Intellectually I know that losing a close game on the road to this OKC team is nothing to be ashamed of but goddamn are they annoying
If I were a Timberwolves fan, these last few minutes would drive me absolutely nuts
I would simply not miss both free throws when there's a minute left and you're behind by two

We’ve been back in Wisconsin for 5 months but we weren’t *back* back until tonight, when I took a glass of wine and a thermometer to the porch to see if it was going to be a walk-in fridge or freezer for Thanksgiving weekend

Well folks that didn’t feel like a three day week but it’s over and tomorrow is Thanksgiving, happy Negroni o’clock

I love a cold, bare, gray, slightly snow dusted November landscape. Despite not being a believer I have to imagine this is the product of a long-standing cultural disposition to bleak Scandinavian Protestantism

Hey look, they put the place I lived from 3 to 17 on the internet. This goes on the list of “notable Mahtomedi facts” along with “they filmed the scene in Fargo with the prostitutes at the bar there” and “actually Michele Bachmann is from the next suburb over thank you very much”

Our kids’ (public) elementary school uses a bunch of apps to send messages, share art projects, etc. And every single damn app is trying to sell something. A new and fun way to experience the scamification of everything. Cool stuff!
