He/him. Left-wing history dad. Pro Popular Front, pro Sewer Socialism, anti borders. Français par mariage. Minnesotan in Wisconsin exile. Mostly posts bad history jokes and occasionally bad history not jokes.
The 4YO requested a pancake shaped like a t-Rex. She said “that looks more like a lizard,” a review I’m pretty happy with under the circumstances.

5 months ago we ended a wonderful year in Paris to move back to the US. It’s nice to be home in many ways, but obviously there is a lot we miss. Fortunately there are ways to recapture the magic (“Champagne Problems,” 2025)

Several inches of snow, a decorated Christmas tree, and a Negroni made partly with pine syrup from said tree. Happy winter, folks

I’ve reached “got snowflake projector to point at my garage for the holiday season” levels of Midwestern dad, and I just went out to look at it in a t-shirt at 11 PM before the big snowstorm starts

My annual Thanksgiving leftover savory pie stood upright this year (until it was sliced into, but we don’t need to discuss that)

Doing our annual Thanksgiving evening watch of Muppet Christmas Carol and the costumes and sets are genuinely so good, in a way that kind of depressingly shows how crap movies look these days

There’s a house in our neighborhood that does a massive Christmas light display every year, and their neighbor understands the assignment

Happy Thanksgiving, my most dad day of the year (he says, about to nap)

The friend who is in charge of mashed potatoes is using purple potatoes this year, and it’s like the Simpsons episode where Homer doesn’t wear a white shirt

We’ve been back in Wisconsin for 5 months but we weren’t *back* back until tonight, when I took a glass of wine and a thermometer to the porch to see if it was going to be a walk-in fridge or freezer for Thanksgiving weekend

Well folks that didn’t feel like a three day week but it’s over and tomorrow is Thanksgiving, happy Negroni o’clock

“Why weren’t they grateful?”

I love a cold, bare, gray, slightly snow dusted November landscape. Despite not being a believer I have to imagine this is the product of a long-standing cultural disposition to bleak Scandinavian Protestantism

*Millennia of global trade, conquest, colonization, immigration, warfare, and environmental exchange pass*

Time to put the little bag of seasoned salt, garlic, and paprika together macaroni and all the packaged cheeses known to man

Our kids’ (public) elementary school uses a bunch of apps to send messages, share art projects, etc. And every single damn app is trying to sell something. A new and fun way to experience the scamification of everything. Cool stuff!

The 4YO’s thoughts while watching me brine the turkey:

“Dad, that’s gross. I’m *not* eating that unless you cook it.”

So rewarding when your kid independently creates the concept of proper food handling

Please send “boil” vibes to my brine, I’d like to go to bed

Made a Neapolitan frittata with Saturday’s leftover bucatini. I’ve never tried this before and am very curious how good it is

We showed the French cousins our detailed Thanksgiving schedule, and put them to work doing some prep work. I may have said “on ne fuck around pas”

My favorite history fact is that Henry Ford stole the concept of the assembly line from the process of making eggplant parm.

Finishing Tooze’s “The Deluge,” and struck by the similarity between the army that was built to crush slavery and save the Union being used for genocide and empire after the Civil War, and this:

Long week but it’s boulevardier o’clock on Friday, and the sausage and acorn squash risotto is starting, hell yeah

Extremely pleasant surprise in the mail after a long day, shoutout @themountaingoats.bsky.social and shoutout ordering books from independent bookstores that get delivered in nice brown paper by the USPS

Next audiobook up, and also I’d really like a movie about this with a “Taking of Pelham 123” dingy, beige, 70s vibe but in the Rust Belt Great Lakes instead of NYC

Two perfect albums from the year I turned 16 (very different)
