TRUMP: “I said why is it we only take people from shithole countries? Why can't we have some people from Norway, Sweden, Denmark… But we always take people from Somalia— places that are filthy, dirty, disgusting.”

Such a mystery what he means when he says this stuff, isn’t it?

A neat thing about birthright citizenship is how it tests whether a person cares at all about the Constitution. There's no argument against it, birthright citizenship is the unambitious text, the obvious intent of the drafters, and the undisputed way it was followed for the past 150+ years.
I continue to think that Matty coming out against birthright citizenship a few months ago should have been taken as a major warning sign that the group chats have already decided to surrender on this.

Totally normal behaviour. For him at least. It does make me wonder how excusable the average American sees this.

It’s not the main issue with the political moment, but it is annoying to me that 5–4 used to involve very interesting legal analysis and now every episode is just ‘yeah, the justices said republicans can do whatever they want again. They didn’t say why’

Simply amazing that the Supreme Court declared an end to legal race discrimination in the affirmative action case two years ago and now allows overt racism in both immigration arrests and redistricting.

Using race to help minorities? Bad. Using it to discriminate against them? Very, very good.

As Justice Kagan begins her dissent by pointing out, what is even the point of trial, of fact-finding, of clear error, of standards of review, when the Supreme Court simply ignores every single part of that and decides everything purely on the papers without any real consideration of the facts?

Trump's attacks against the Somali community are racist, vile, & predictable.

As prices rise & his popularity plummets, Trump is resorting to hate and division — hoping he can get you to blame your neighbors, so you'll forget about his failures.

This is an eminently sensible thread and should be read and taken to heart by anyone in a faculty supervisory/academic leadership role. This is, tragically, the new landscape, and just because you don't like it doesn't mean you can ignore it.
Departments, faculty: we have to get our heads out of the sand. We have to understand the political landscape and take concerns seriously. Our students and NTT colleagues need our help and support. Retreating to a silo is giving up just when active support is necessary. 10/end
