Lots of parts of the Internet not working for me today.

We’ve gotten away from that original idea of redundancy and resilience, haven’t we?

When I’m accused of “technopessimism“ I counter that I’m not “pessimistic about technology“; I am opposed to the economic, political, and social project of upward wealth transfer that “AI” is being leveraged to bring about. If that phrasing is useful to others, then go ahead and use it.

The Citizens United decision has corrupted our government and is destroying our democracy. Here's a way to get rid of it. robertreich.substack.com/p/how-to-get...
How to Get Rid of "Citizens United"
We can do away with it without a new Supreme Court. Nor do we need a constitutional amendment. There’s a far simpler way.

The 1178 Ranshofen Gospels give big Monday energy: three evangelists turn up to work missing key tools: no pen, wrong ink, no parchment.... only St John is prepared for the day.

A medieval reminder that some Mondays haven’t changed!

‘Black’ isn’t the original main English word for this colour.

In Old English, that was ‘sweart’. It’s the ancestor of ‘swart’, the now archaic cognate of German ‘schwarz’, Dutch ‘zwart’, and Swedish ‘svart’.

‘Black’ gradually displaced ‘swart’ during the late Middle Ages.

In sociology, a recurring methodological problem encountered by those trying to study the very rich is that their domains of existence are so far removed from the experiences of ordinary people that the researchers, before they even start, have to fundamentally reshape their social ontologies
When we talk about "taxing rich people" there's folks who think we're talking about Aunt Edna who has the second summer home. The astronomical levels of "rich" that now exist are almost unfathomable to people. It's the stuff of vast empirical dynasties. We're talking about taxing emperors.

The ultra-wealthy will often take whole fleets of cars with them when they travel, loading vehicles, along with motorbikes and other toys, onto chartered cargo aircraft that follow their private jets.

This is how they do it: cnn.it/3X8V14a

i think it's useful to look at areas where the *tech* has gotten much better while tech *interactions* have gotten way worse. streaming has gotten worse, google search has gotten worse, digital cameras are leaps better. apple's silicone is so good it's threatening their user upgrade cycle
it’s so weird to look around and realize like, tech and media are materially worse than a decade ago

I am a strong believer in a maximum wage. Rather than a set dollar amount, it could be something along the lines of orders of magnitude. Maybe like 100x the lowest paid worker or something. It would still be an obscene amount of money, and if you want to make more, you gotta lift everyone else up.
Walmart and McDonald’s are among the top employers of workers who rely on food stamps.

McDonald's CEO raked in $18.2M last year — over 1,000x the company's median employee pay.

Walmart's CEO pocketed $27.4M — 930x the company's median employee pay.

See the problem?

To my mind, what’s funny is few modern media recommendation algorithms “get” me as well as my TiVo did in 2005.

Possibly because TiVo had no reason to push one program over another, unlike media platforms which profit from you viewing particular items.

"Never spread the lie in the headline" should be a hard rule of 21st century journalism.

Research shows that repeating lies helps to spread them, and people read headlines more than they read stories.
News media has to do better with headlines that present false and unverified public health claims.
