This is exactly what right-wing antisemites say regarding the Jews in Europe: That they are permanent outsiders, that they never were and cannot become European, and all of their culture is "stolen" from the European nations that allowed them to live, parasitically, within them.

Study the history of any culture that isn't cut off from all contact with any other culture, and you'll find their cuisine comes from bits and pieces of every other culture they've contacted -- and that, in turn, came from those culture's contacts, and so on.

AFAIK, though, his public claim was “Imma find India”, not “I’m going to find whatever is between here and India.” Maybe he did know *something* was there, and was pulling a fast one on Isabella. It’s the kind of thing you‘d need to know way more than me about to speculate on.

(Everyone knew the world was round. Columbus fucked up how BIG it was. That was the reason no one else was trying at the time -- they knew the distance correctly, they didn't know there was a landmass in the way! Remove the Americas from the globe. Imagine trying to sail to Asia through THAT ocean!)

I think this needs to be said more: If a time traveler infects Baby Columbus with smallpox (for the irony!), contact with Europe might have happened a few years later, but it would have happened. Too many nations were seeking a trade advantage for *someone* to have not said "Let's sail WEST. YOLO!"

I am unable to parse that sentence. It's like one of those "the appeals court reversed the affirmation of the denial of the upholding of the TRO" announcements from the court-watchers I follow. Fortunately, they are kind enough to explain if asked.
