That said if anyone is near PA and would like one or both they are very good boys. They need forever homes indoors with humans. If you have vet references and room for one or two kittens, DM me and I’ll figure out how to get them to you.

I’ll share a lot more on this topic once the book comes out. Short version: practically all futurism is *conditional futurism.*

People tell stories about the future in order to influence behavior in the present, and make their prediction more/less likely.

This seems like such an obvious, easy thing to do to improve the lives of kids, parents, and all those who work in schools and daycare centres.

Please read this to understand how dire the situation is in Nunavut: www.aptnnews.ca/featured/foo...

I made print copies of my book a fundraiser to raise awareness of food sovereignty/security issues in the North, but the PDF is free if you want to download + donate directly to QCFC + other orgs.

There are benefits to having a sensitive nose, but being able to differentiate cigarette brands is not one of them.

That would fall under (3). The fact that they have to have such a broad category for that says it all, really

The @chicago.suntimes.com photographer who risked their personal health and safety to take this photograph is Anthony Vazquez. Please credit photographers and media outlets. In this age of misinformation, a photo with no context could be anything at all.

Please remind us who the domestic terrorists are again.

It's brutal. I have always struggled with plane travel and the fact that they just keep making it more and more awful has NOT helped my fear of flying (which is mainly about being stuffed into a small, uncomfortable space with people all around and no way to leave)

That... doesn't look very positive? 😬

I am being asked to tell my department which pieces of lab equipment should be supported with backup power because they expect rolling blackouts and brownouts in 2026 due to increased energy demands from AI. In case you're wondering how my day is going.

A candid and transparent postmortem of two technical incidents we've had on Knowledge Commons recently, brightened up at the end with a summary of the good work we're doing in moving development forward.

sam the number of substack dudes who have completely gone over the edge is pretty instructive tbh

i really believe the pressure to constantly create on people who are actually not as creative as they think wears them down mentally

Paul Simon songs ranked based on how many people know they're about his relationship with Carrie Fisher or demise thereof:
1️⃣"Hearts and Bones"
2️⃣"Graceland"
3️⃣"She Moves On"
4️⃣"Allergies"

Paul Simon, born today in 1941.

“It’s a cliché,” he said, “but music really IS the closest we come to a universal language. It crosses borders as effortlessly as a cloud.”

I do this with Zotero (at the moment I use the extension in Firefox to save references right into preexisting folders) - good thread 👇

People who say "you can't possibly read everything you cite" are saying a lot about themselves, IMO.

It doesn't have to be a heavy lift. I spend about half an hour a day processing new-to-me papers by organizing them in my reference managers & adding topical tags so I can create bibliographies.

it's kinda weird that all the software i am expected to use for work are all written by distributed teams, go, python, postgres, linux, chrome, k8s etc

and despite being told "the best teams work in an office together" i don't know of any software i use that's actually written that way
