A fuller intro: Noah, he/him, left-handed / -politicked. My dog's Clark. My cat's Minerva.

For sickos: I run a fictional baseball league set in a 🇵🇷 that became free in 1868. I call games every week. Catch that at @lnpgaceta.org.

I also co-host a podcast about food called No Substitutions, Please.
Clark is a very floofy white dog with dark brown eyes and lips who is happily hoarding a red Kong and brown fuzzy teddy bear with a tan belly. His ears are back and eyes fully round, and teeth shown in a grin of toy-addled craziness. Minerva is a dilute tortoiseshell kitty—she’s gray with stripey markings in tan all over, like latte swirls. She sits on an iPad with one paw out in front of her and the other tucked in, like a proper lady, and has ears back and narrow eyes because she’s probably hearing a bird.

No, no, it actually rules that no matter how many times the Duolingo guy openly says his goal is to ensure language teachers don’t have jobs because we’re all unnecessary freeloaders and replaces people with the Bullshit Machine, we still can’t get people to stop fucking using his shit app.

thank god the red zone channel started running commercials. when it was commercial-free i'd get to 7:30 p.m., look at how i'd spent my day, and realize i'd burned through an entire sunday without growing or developing at all as a consumer. and if i'm not a consumer i'm nothing at all

That’s what I said to the blue jay!

A blue jay legitimately just tried to eat my house, so I guess we’re a Mariners house now. #TridentsUp, Big Dumper &c. &c.

Over the time I’ve been teaching we’ve adopted pretty much every tech tool possible, and the sum total of their contributions to my career has been to increase how much paperwork I have to do. No amount of information availability changes that the whole responsibility of communication is on our end.

I bang on about this all the time, but I’m going to keep doing it, because it hasn’t changed: right now, there are thousands of teachers in this country being told they aren’t just less effective educators, but that they’re bad human beings, for not just happily bending the knee to Silicon Valley.

The first time I went to a NYSCATE regional conference, which was entirely about using ed tech, the theme was literally superheroes vs. supervillains, with the latter all named things like “the Delayer” or “the Questioner,” as if the only morally-good stance was uncritical acceptance. Horrid stuff.

I get that we don’t have the expertise in the building to do all of this, but it’s so cool to have to sign up for a million potential data breach points (though at least they’re on a separate email address) just to do my job.

The thing about the Phillies is that they had one job (save us all from Dodgers fans being even more insufferable than usual) and they couldn’t get it done.

This one especially drives me up the wall, because there’s been a ton of opposition to this from a humanist, pedagogical point of view, from educators who saw the writing on the wall years ago, and we got dismissed as cranks at best and ableist tinpots who didn’t want to give up control at worst.

Something I didn't appreciate until my kids started school was just how enmeshed the tech industry is in public ed. Attendance, school lunch, communication, calendars, testing, teaching tools--everything has its own app. There's a lot of money to be made there.
jessicacalarco.com
Meanwhile, ed tech companies are salivating--eager to sell "solutions" to families whose schools will now struggle (even more than they already have) to meet their kids' learning needs.

(Here are a few of the ed tech ads I've been tracking over the past few months)

Puerto Rico es un país diseñado con el sumo propósito de ser hostil contra las personas con discapacidades y contra los peatones. Son las últimas personas que se toman en consideración ante todo. Esta sociedad de carro maligna e híperindividualista será nuestra tumba.

If I could choose one superpower, I would obviously want it to be absolute mastery over life and death.

But if that’s not forthcoming, summoning guacamole at will would be a close second.

They're talking about killing leftist activists. They're talking about murdering people organizing in defense of immigrant communities, doing mutual aid work, and protesting their violence. They are talking about murdering people like me and my friends. We must do more than acknowledge it's fascism.

My gosh. After the US bombed multiple boats in the middle of the ocean, murdering people on grounds that they were allegedly "carrying drugs," the US Attorney General says "Just like we did with cartels, we're going to take the same approach, President Trump, with Antifa."

I used to get mad when people misused "decimated" to refer to things that weren't 1/10th destroyed, but I've given it some thought and now I've done a complete 360 on it

“Machado’s politics are steeped in violence. She has called for foreign intervention, even appealing directly to Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the architect of Gaza’s annihilation, to help ‘liberate’ Venezuela with bombs under the banner of ‘freedom.’”
'Peace' Has No Meaning When Right-Wingers Like Maria Corina Machado Win the Nobel Prize | Common Dreams
As Venezuelan-American, I know exactly what Machado represents: the smiling face of Washington’s regime-change machine, the polished spokesperson for sanctions, privatization, and foreign intervention...
