Europe’s antitrust chief Teresa Ribera has unleashed a blistering attack on Trump administration, accusing Washington of using “blackmail” to strong-arm the EU into watering down its tech rules

The war will end when Russia stops fighting. Therefore, pressure has to be put on Russia, so that they stop believing that they will win. Why is that so hard to understand?

Stop pretending the US are our friends. This is not temporary. The American withdrawal from European obligations leaving only their strategic lock ins and dependencies has been an openly declared throughout many administrations. It is baffling that the elites cannot handle this.
By @alanderminna.bsky.social: "Now it is time for Europe to take a more proactive stance, stop wasting time jumping through the same hoops with Trump, and start focusing on squeezing Russia until it has to start negotiating seriously."

The Rise and Fall of the Dim-Wit Plan
The latest iteration of a "secret US-Russia peace plan for Ukraine" would have been funny, if it wasn't so cruel to Ukraine.

"Too many European governments still behave as if losing Ukraine would be unfortunate but manageable. This is fantasy. The destruction of Ukraine would reshape Europe’s security architecture for decades, and not in Europe’s favour."

Circus
Amidst the absolute chaos of a Witkoff-stamped Russian psyop-as-peace plan, discussion is filled with anger at Washington and at Moscow.

I fear that a lot of elements on European defense (including the nuclear component) will be viewed as politically impossible until the moment they become absolutely necessary, by which point it will be too late.

True, of course. But since Russias neighbours are not really feeling the whole hearted support of all of the rest of EU - or NATO for that matter, I think a centralized EU-wide foreign office is not necessarily either realistic nor timely right now. Unless the south decides to wake up.
To put this more bluntly, Europe has largely outsourced its foreign policy to America since WWII. This has created the illusion within the EU that foreign policy remains a national “competency.” It’s not. So if Europe wants a bigger voice it needs to speak as Europe.
Europe has a foreign policy problem. It does need to engage in these talks and doing so as 7 or 8 leaders just doesn't work. It makes it easy to work around Europe. So the EU should pick a special envoy - perhaps the fmr Finnish president Niinisto or a Draghi type to engage on behalf of Europe.

Exactly this. Zelensky will have to pretend he takes this new US stupidity seriously, but there is absolutely no cards that can back this threat up.

I'm looking forward to the part where Ukraine says "no" to surrendering and it turns out Trump doesn't have any cards. Because refusing to sell weapons to your allies at profit just to punish Ukraine for not surrendering isn't a card.

Letting a Russian-written plan circulate as U.S. policy for three days only makes sense if the admin was either completely incompetent or quietly going along with it until the backlash hit. I think the latter.

Not a peace plan: but a corrupt deal in the tradition of Ribbentrop-Molotov and Yalta.

The definitive piece on this proposal.
This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.

And Trump is weak right now. He just suffered a humiliating loss in Congress & the GOP was roundly defeated in the recent off-year elections. Trump’s approval ratings on the economy are dismal & SCOTUS may remove his ability to impose tariffs at will. Now is the time for Europe to stand up to him.
