Literary fiction yes, but it's also obvious when a SFF novelist decides to use "mystery" as a setting but thinks the genre techne is beneath them. (Speaker For The Dead jumps to mind, but it happens a lot.)

(It's also obvious and delightful when the novelist has a deep love for the mystery genre!)

For the bit, I would also do Apocalypse Now with Gonzo as Kurtz; there's something really appealing about doing a muppet version where the muppet doesn't show up until two hours in.

I finally got around to watching it this year and it's so much more sincere than I expected from Corman. And Shatner nails the overconfident, weaselly fragility of the role; honestly one of the best portrayals of evil I've seen.

The thing is, when you get parachuted into a team it does make sense to meet with people and understand their existing roles. But the extent to which you need to know that is almost exactly the same as the extent to which you can do it in individual meetings; otherwise it shouldn't matter to you.

In my ignorance I would have assumed the primary pitfall was that (like Helena, Angie, Barbara Ann, or Eileen) it's a name strongly associated with one (1) song, so you just get the song every time you introduce yourself.

(I get "Sweet Baby James" a shocking amount for how common a name it is.)

Interesting version of this is "why do I, the author, feel compelled to do it this way?"

Omelas for sure, but I find more niche/specific examples equally compelling (e.g., The House That Jack Built, which feels exclusively for people with deep familiarity AND contempt for von Trier's other work).

The thing about Krasznahorkai is that he's brilliant and well-deserving of the prize but it's hard to be THAT enthusiastic about him when Béla Tarr's movies were better than the novels (which is a totally unfair comparison because Sátántangó was also better than nearly everything else).

To me this is like going to a Chinese restaurant and asking "how is rice restaurant food"? It's a tasty accompaniment for a number of foods that are restaurant food, but you're not paying for the skill with which it got made.

I'm complaining a bit; in particular, the magick meter never feels like a thing you can meaningfully take into account and manage/ration while in combat, you just either have it or you don't.

(I also don't think the sister blades are fun to use, but that's taste.)
