I'm bringing this up because if you're newer to this game than I am and thinking, "Is it just me, or is this kind of miserable?" . . .

. . . yeah. It's kind of miserable. If I didn't enjoy writing short fiction as much as I do, I think I would have given up by now.

"Smart" features on .... ANYTHING lol.
Appliances (why?!), my car, watches, computer programs, ANYthing that even hints at it being a/i, and especially any home device that can listen and connect to everything. No siri, no Google home.

The news about lead in pea protein makes me wonder if the cause of the increased heart disease in “grain free formula” dog foods (which rely on pea protein) is lead related.

The Jungfrau peak catches the last rays of sun over the Lauterbrunnen valley. 🇨🇭 📷
A large snow covered peak on the left glows orange. To the right a glacier carved valley sits in shadow.

My local library even has a seed library— you take seeds out, and bring seeds back from what you grow!

That’s also a super handy thing in developing seeds that can stand up to local climate change!

So, gardeners, go ask your library if they have one or could start one! 🌱

Often when I talk to people who haven't stepped into a library for a long time, they think library = books. And yeah, library = books. I love books. But we also have ebooks, for free! DVDs, Blu-ray, streaming video, audiobooks, eaudiobooks, online classes, we've got it all.

Galleys are in! This spine design is A+.
Galleys of my next book, "True Color." You can see the front cover (a tan field with 12 multicolored...tabs? Cards? Books? Hard to tell!) and one book up on end so you can see its spine. The spine has six colored lines separating my name and the title, and I love it.

Read what you want to read and don't worry about what you "should" read. Your time is finite, books are awesome and there millions more than you can possibly read in a lifetime, there is no reason to self inflict literary suffering.

A lot of comments on Mars rovers or Moon landings, but it's important to remember that the planet NASA studies most is Earth. This is less about cutting flashy things like moonwalks and more about keeping communities in the dark on climate, weather, agriculture, pollution, natural hazards, and more.

the funniest thing about this is that those of us who grew up in the divide all have a bunch of pre-cell phone numbers memorized and almost none afterwards

I know the home phone numbers of two of my childhood best friends from thirty years ago and none of the cell numbers of my college friends
bleary.off-the-records.com
If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

And that's what I think a lot of today's writers get backwards; they think fluffy prose is what readers remember. It's not. They remember the quality of the observations. That's the difference between a book that feels true and one that doesn't.

No matter how bad/trashy/stupid you find a super-popular book... it's saying something that lots of people (with a wide diversity of tastes) want to hear - and therefore, it's worth examining thoughtfully and critically.

Also, adding to this that if you lose a pet and still have food there are places that will take leftover food. When I lost my last dog I was able to donate half of a 40-lb bag at a local vet to pass on to someone who needed it.

Gentle reminder: I am seeing more "I cannot afford pet food" posts & if you might face this in the near future/now, I recommend checking your local area's subreddit and posting if anyone knows of local programs for pet food. Many areas have small under-the-radar charities that give out pet food.

Twelve Apostles, Great Ocean Road, VIC, Australia - Sunset light bathes the iconic limestone stacks in soft pink and lavender tones, as clouds drift across the evening sky.

A long exposure photograph of the Twelve Apostles at sunset. Tall limestone stacks rise from the ocean, their rugged surfaces glowing with warm pink light. The sea appears silky and mist-like due to the long exposure, while dramatic clouds painted in soft pink and purple tones fill the sky. The cliffs on the right are illuminated by the fading light, creating a tranquil and ethereal coastal scene.

Cursing is rarely a symbol of low class. It's often a mark of high authenticity.

Evidence: Swearing predicts higher rates of honesty and integrity. It signals a willingness to prize candor over courtesy.

A little profanity can show that you're being real and you do give a damn.

I have one now that holds up and inflates by plugging it into the wall. But back in college I had one I used as a bed for a year that started the night inflated where I was on the ground with puffed up sides by morning so I know your pain.
