Caveat: I DO want to ‘do my own research’ when it comes to active galactic nuclei (AGN), I.e. supermassive black holes that live in the centers of galaxies & which are actively consuming large masses of gas.

But for the rest of it, yeah, pls y’all experts tell me the answer?
I do not want to “Do my own research.” I want to pay trained accredited experts to do the research, trained accredited experts to report on findings, and trained accredited experts to make policy based on them.

I am busy af with my own job, I don’t need to do eight zillion more.

I hope Irish folks see the similarities between this rhetoric and the excuses being made by FFG about housing and immigration. You don’t want a government that behaves in any way similar to the USA right now. FFG need to go.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

This is why it kills me a little bit every time PA politicians talk about encouraging data centers to open in my state. Fuck that, no. Data centers are neither progress, nor economic growth, nor job creators. They are a drain on the electric grid, on taxpayers, and severe polluters. Fuck. No.
A new state-by-state evaluation of the projected energy and water use of "AI" data centers in the US. Looks… real bad. Like, "undoing tech sector climate gains" bad.

Strongly recommends immediately ensuring any & all new "AI" data centers to run on existing & expanded renewables grids. Which… yeah.

Defunding scientists for the nationality of who they co-author with or who they train.

One of the most radical attack on freedom of speech in US history. A far right nationalist destruction of US science. Such a shameful time to be an American that this racist stupidity has become mainstream.
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

It’s important to recognize the (ongoing) complicity of STEM folks in this trend of destroying humanities. We were happy to latch onto “employability” because we benefitted but now university admin believe unis are job training institutes, and even basic sciences (mathematical physics!) are at risk.

Today we've published five articles about the results. 1/

“What are the options?”

“Red or brown”

“… no sauce please”
