Notice that @aptshadow.bsky.social ’s Children of Time is 99p on kindle in the UK. If you have any interest in SF and haven’t read it, this is a no-brainer.

I have gained some understanding of my own writing process…
I have now reached the "all my rough paper has been written on on both sides and around the edges and looks like the confession letter of a guy who thinks aliens are talking to him through a stuffed weasel and that's why he had to eat his neighbour's dog" stage of writing this book.

Gloomy but probably right…
Money is short and unlikely to start flowing soon. Academic professionals are exhausted and demoralised. The public is not that interested.

@gsoh31.bsky.social, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Oxford Brookes, explores the decline in HE.
Where now for Britain’s Universities?
UK higher education now faces a very bleak future, retreating in the face of little public sympathy and limited political interest.

‘Sweet bleeding Mithras, take some fucking pride in your work’ is my new motto.
I mean, seriously. I want to have a delicious story to read. I have no desire to ingest reams of featureless slop you couldn't be bothered to even think or care about. Yes, you're doing this for money. But sweet bleeding Mithras, take some fucking pride in your work.

When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”
To repeat: "A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for."
Today's university slashing and burning is Edinburgh, where about 10% of the budget will be cut. There'll be another case every single day until UK govts actually do something. A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for.

This is a humane and thoughtful review of what sounds like an important but frustrating book.

A Review of Laura Delano’s “Unshrunk”

RIP Robert Paul Wolff (leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2025/01...). I had a sort of love-hate relationship with his In Defence of Anarchism during my PhD work, and later really enjoyed the episodic autobiography he posted on his blog. I wish I'd had the chance to meet him.

Anyone here thinking about doing a #phd? We have a healthy number of PhD studentships available for 2025/6 entry at the School of Computer Science, University of St Andrews, Scotland. These include 3.5 years of fees and a stipend, and are open to students from all over the world. Details below:

6. And, worse, the concentration of a smaller number of studentships in a few large grants and in the favoured universities who get studentships is a huge barrier to access. Arts and humanities PhDs shouldn't be a hobby for people who can independently afford them.

5. Is this a good idea? No, I don't think so. Arts and humanities PhDs are typically individual passion projects, not parts of large labs; and that's where we get the next generation of researchers and teachers in our disciplines.
