I'll keep saying this over & over - nobody got into shmups to play novice modes. They got into them because they saw Hibachi, Larsa, an Ikaruga double play or something like that. Devs gotta be confident & have a punk attitude & spend less time thinking about novices

Some modern STGs are conscious of possibly being anyone's first arcade scrolling shooter, and bend themselves into knots trying to be an entire genre tutorial before being their own identifiable game.

As ever, make the games/music/videos/writing you'd want to enjoy, and others will enjoy it too.
liking game genres that spawned from the arcades condemns you to forever suffer cuz no one outside of the bubble gets it and every developer wants to the appeal to the guy who doesn't get it

A second Wild Guns-like cabal shooter?? Why did most of the arcade game releases this year decide to come out in the same month, goddamn
Speaking of arcade goodness, @macaw45.bsky.social was streaming a game tonight that I'd had an eye on since it launched at Halloween, but hadn't tried yet - Silver Bullet.

A simple retro arcade score-attack game that completely recontextualizes itself with every new level. Looked fantastic.
Silver Bullet on Steam
Silver Bullet is a gothic arcade shooter: blast your way through spooky stages and macabre mini games as Van Helsing, to rescue your pet puppies who were dognapped by Reggie the Vampire!

Normalize the idea that genre devs should play the games in the genres they're making to at least a somewhat competent level

Here's the in game finale to R-Type Delta which is running so fast the buildings no longer sink, all particles are missing & the music hard cuts as it's all been scrolled off-screen. The whole game's like this, so the music sync'ing to the action in st.3, lol no etc

Also missing enemies, bugs etc

People trying to refute your opinion with the word "subjective" like there's such a thing as an objective opinion and they somehow have it and everyone else is therefore inherently wrong

And no I don't give a single fuck what hack rags like IGN or Game Informer tell you to think now fuck off

KIRO 7 ran an article and two TV pieces on the theft of a box truck full of arcade PCBs, artwork, and machines from my workplace yesterday. If anyone in the Seattle area sees someone offloading a ton of CPS2/NAOMI/Neo Geo PCBs, stuff of that nature, please reach out.

When a major story beat in Ghost of Yotei was labeled "The Cost of Revenge," I felt relief because I am glad a Playstation game is finally covering this topic. I hope we can get some answers re: revenge, and whether it is a bad thing, and maybe even causes a cycle of violence

I love a good official release and buy M2 ports of shit that isn't even super interesting to me (thats how i fell in love with Gradius) but we gotta kill the lazy narcs in peoples head demanding a convenient official steam release. Realistically it will never happen for hundreds of fantastic games
tbh as much as official rereleases are good for accessibility, I also feel like a lot of people just won't play games if they don't have official versions and that's not great for culture. Everyone should be downloading random ROMs until they find that special one that breaks their brain wide open.
