If this is remotely true, then Southern Illinois University Carbondale needs to have an intervention with its Dean of Education who does not seem to understand “education”

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

White cynics, please stop putting words in my mouth. I didn’t say toxic positivity is good. I didn’t say hope for capitalism is good. I didn’t say hope for liberalism is good. I said the basis for liberation movements is hope and optimism. You do this every time Black and Brown people speak.

Since people find being hopeful and optimistic so cringe these days, let me remind you once again that there isn’t a single liberation movement in the world that wasn’t built on hope and optimism.

I’m so happy to say that after being in our rescue for 11 months, both being adopted then returned when their first homes weren’t the right fit, then bonding strongly with each other here in Casa Crits, Satsuma and Chicory are being adopted together at last!! They’ll be going on a huge adventure!

He doesn’t sleep with me yet, but he loves our snuggle time. I’m so grateful for this big sweetheart! Hard to believe it’s been seven months already since his Gotcha Day.

I understand there’s pie discourse happening? Not joining in, since I currently can’t enjoy any variety of pie due to MCAS.

But!

As an alternative, may I suggest this lovely bookish baking adventure by the always-wonderful @tkingfisher.com?

I just started it and I’m already in love.

I got a Twitter DM from the publisher of a book by Jeffrey Haas (Fred Hampton's lawyer) that I'd recommended in a thread that went viral, thanking me for the unexpected spike in sales. I'm sure we're talking dozens, not hundreds, but they were like doing highkey internet sleuthing to figure it out!
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Just posted this to FedBook a few days ago: "It has become so much harder to do very basic things and that makes everything feel like a heavier lift." - So yes, I really agree with this.
Everything seems so much harder lately. Just hard, hard, hard. (IT'S FINE IT'S FINE)

Literally this. If you don’t have a poem that moves you, you don’t need to read one. If you don’t do elaborate toasts normally, you don’t need to start today.
And maybe people also need to be willing to let go of parts of the day they don't actually care about? If there's not a single person who can think of a toast or a party game, maybe skip the toast and then do a puzzle after dinner?

(A) stop feeling pressure to be perfect;
(B) normalize asking questions, because that is normalizing learning;
(C) do not ask AI if your turkey is done; ask a meat thermometer
This is so soulless, I can't stand it. We have BRAINS. We can USE THEM.
