when democratic politicians respond to the assault on Minneapolis with "we must REFORM ICE, they need more TRAINING" I recall the very recent past: holding all three branches they increased funding, did no reforms, then ran for a second term on shit like this

In Printz v. United States, #SCOTUS held that the Constitution bars the federal government from forcing or otherwise compelling local or state governments to enforce federal law.

The liberal squish who wrote the majority opinion in that case? Justice Antonin Scalia:

Very little if anything seems to have changed on the ground. ICE is still out there terrorizing neighborhoods and trying to disappear neighbors. None of us on the ground are buying this bullshit. We will keep organizing and fighting.
The intense fallout from the killing of Alex Pretti has forced President Trump to publicly change course in Minneapolis.

Listen to our White House reporters discuss the changes on today's episode of "The Daily."

This was an invented moral panic. The NYT and Fox News ran more stories about trans people than the Advocate, an explicitly LGBTQ publication. It was the exact same story in the UK. The media fanned the flames of a moral panic.
Just started doing new data analysis and I know I keep saying this, but: I really, really don't think people appreciate how much this moral panic was a deliberate and extremely expensive invention.

This will become an escalating problem with tariffs because Amazon is not and has not been a retail business for the better part of a decade; they are now a cloud hosting business that happens to run a profitable retail as a side hustle. If that profitability drops, they can afford to cut losses.
"The reductions we are making today will impact approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon, and we're again working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted."
Update on our organization
The following message was shared with Amazon employees earlier today.

Some are pushing off paying for retirement, or dipping into their savings. Some are looking for extra work to afford plans that they aren’t sure will actually cover their health care bills. Some are planning to go w/o insurance, hoping they won’t get too sick to manage medical expenses on their own.
Health insurance costs are up. Women and LGBTQ+ people are paying the price.
After the expiration of ACA subsidies, soaring health care costs have forced some to dip into savings, take on second jobs or go without coverage.

It’s that you’re blaming the oppressed and exploited for things the exploiters are doing and for a system and institutions they didn’t build and don’t realize these institutions are doing what they were built to do.
