Oof, relatable disclosure in Illinois's/Chicago's National Guard case: One of Judge Perry's law clerks tried to text a fellow clerk to complain about DOJ, accidentally texted a friend who worked for the opposing party (IL AG's office)
Jon Seidel @jonseidel.bsky.social • 15m
U.S. District Judge April Perry just took the bench for this morning's status hearing in Illinois v. Trump, over deployment of the National Guard.

Jon Seidel @jonseidel.bsky.social • 10m
Perry called everyone in to make a disclosure. After listening to 9th Circuit oral arguments on Nat Guard over the weekend, Perry says one of her clerks realized the government had taken a position there
"inconsistent" with what had been said in Perry's courtroom.

Jon Seidel @jonseidel.bsky.social • 8m
That frustrated law clerk texted someone they "believed" to be another law clerk, but who turned out to be a "friend of theirs who works at the Illinois attorney general's office."

Jon Seidel @jonseidel.bsky.social • 7m
That clerk realized what they'd done within about 90 seconds, deleted/edited the message and asked the friend if they'd read it. The friend said they'd "seen enough to know it was not meant for them."

Bottom line: Perry says that clerk will no longer be working on this case, going forward.
Neither side made a motion based on this disclosure, but I didn't hear anyone rule it out, either.
Either way, hearing adjourned.

Yellow fever, dengue, and malaria used to be endemic to river valleys and the southeastern US. That was back in the day before we had decorative man made ponds in gated subdivisions and stagnant puddles from lawn irrigation everywhere. They'd be much more widespread now.

New York health officials have confirmed the first locally transmitted case of the chikungunya virus which causes high fever, joint pain and fatigue.

It’s usually a tropical virus, but there are now infected mosquitoes spreading in New York. (NYT)

Happy to block anyone whose contribution in this moment is to immediately police the language people are using to describe fed invasions of their cities. People are going to be imprecise. They are experiencing immense trauma. If you haven't had a gun pointed at you recently, maybe sit this one out

Here is the Vice President defending adults who said they love Hitler, want to rape their enemies, put their political opponents in gas chambers, and that Black people are monkeys. Just to name a few.

Are these those Christian values JD Vance talks about?

I'm so angry at Fenway Health for capitulating to Trump's threats. I sent them a harsh email yesterday.

I know individuals with far more to lose who are braver than so many privileged people are and will STILL speak out- willing to risk it all by merely doing that.

Like this “poem” was almost added to the Congressional Record nearly 30 years after it was first circulated because the First Lady hosted a Black woman at a tea party for Congressional wives. This poem was written and circulated in the first place because Booker T Washington visited the WH!

one thing white people love is pretending we're going to be The Generation That Ends Racism
ultralaser.bsky.social
every generation treats the social progress of the previous one as the baseline and so every generation thinks they're more progressive than their parents, but we're not, it's always, always been about fifty fifty on whether *more* progress would be either good or the beginning of the end of society

After signing up for self-deportation, Emily and Deybis sold their car and moved to an unfinished basement. But DHS never sent them the promised plane tickets.

Now they worry about surviving winter. Weeks ago, they sold their daughter’s bed to pay rent.

➡️ Read more: https://propub.li/4ohnDm6
Article excerpt: Emily said she made clear the family didn’t have Venezuelan passports but was told that wouldn’t be a problem; the U.S. government would procure any necessary documents for them. They said the operator gave them an Aug. 1 departure date and told them to expect their plane tickets by email.

Emily and Deybis sold their car and moved with their children to Columbus, Ohio, where Deybis’ nephew let them stay in his unfinished basement apartment until their departure. The plane tickets never came.

Then the nephew was detained in a traffic stop and deported. Panicked, Emily and Deybis said they called the toll-free number again and again, leaving messages that went unanswered. Emily submitted a new application and sent more emails. Article excerpt: ...They found travel agencies that offer to procure travel documents at a cost but said they were told the Venezuelan government requires an arrival date and proof that plane tickets have been purchased. Emily and Deybis can’t afford them.

“Thank you so much for your patience and we understand your frustration,” they heard back in another email. “Wait for new instructions from DHS.”

As they wait, they worry about how they’ll survive when winter comes. Most days, Deybis visits local food pantries and looks for discarded items in alleys and on street corners that they can resell. A few weeks ago, they sold their daughter’s bed to help pay the rent.

“We’d rather be in Venezuela with our family than suffer here,” he said.

Shit, you don't domesticate boars because they're good eating necessarily, you do it because putting them in a pen is basically the only thing that stops them from killing everyone in the tri-barony area.

Remember the Trump administration's unsuccessful Labor Day effort to expel children to Guatemala?

The lawyers filed an amended complaint today, expanding the scope of the litigation — reflecting the long-term goals of the administration to do the same thing with kids from many countries.
INTRODUCTION
1. This is a complaint on behalf of hundreds of children at risk of unlawful removal
from the United States.
2. Plaintiffs are unaccompanied minors in Office of Refugee Resettlement (“ORR”)
custody whom Defendants have sought or are seeking to remove from the United States in clear
violation of the unambiguous protections that Congress has provided them as vulnerable
children. Defendants have unlawfully claimed the power to expel these children, in violation of
the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 (“TVPRA”), the Immigration
and Nationality Act (“INA”), and the Constitution. Plaintiffs seek to represent a class of
unaccompanied children who are or will be placed in ORR custody and who do not have a final
order of removal or grant of voluntary departure by an immigration judge

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

I was on the board of Fenway and I warned the then CEO in 2023 that this would happen. This was cowardly capitulation sacrificing trans youth.

1. In a major capitulation to Trump, Fenway Health, a center ostensibly dedicated to LGBTQ+ healthcare, has ended its trans care program under 19.

It could have fought for its patients. It chose instead to roll over.
