listen

we can all agree it's a misleading name

but for none of the "ooh we're so traditionalist" "oooh we're the only ones correctly interpreting ancient doctrine" Catholics in this administration to know that the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is about MARY being born without sin is banoonies
ok it’s legitimately funny that they can’t even throw red meat to Catholics without falling into heresy

If they hadn’t burned all the witches and midwives back in the day, we’d probably know more about perimenopause and menopause right now. We know fuck all about a condition that half the population goes through because men are a bunch of plonkers*

I shall simply free the stuck wheel of bureaucracy by firing everybody who knows how to do things
Lesson one: Yes, you can do a lot of things if you break the law.
Lesson two: Doing something is not the same as doing a good thing - it is harder to build than it is to destroy.
Trump has built nothing like the TVA. His lawbreaking is not "freeing the stuck wheels of bureaucracy."

On a related note: buy books. Buy actual books. Buy actual books you can put in a stack so when someone comes to your place you can make them look at the stack and behold your books. The truth is buying one book can make your life better, and you can do it *over and over* and no one can stop you.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Why can't the right win without gerrymandering?
Why can't the right uphold free speech when it isn't about them?
Why can't the right mind their own business?
Why is the right the party of Fuck Your Feelings until it's time to joke about that mediocre podcaster who caught one in the neck?
The real question is not "Why is Bluesky so left-coded," the real question is "Why can't the right exist in a social media environment without algorithmic assistance, where people can ignore them"

I literally forgot about it until just now, but that did help improve my morale.
Do you ever just remind yourself that Dick Cheney is still dead, for morale?

I have never understood why I would want to sit down and drink with someone in charge of the most powerful nation on earth.

1. Don't they have more important shit to do?

2. ...I don't really want them drinking on the job...

3. I sure as fuck hope they have people who know more than I do around!
"you just want to have a beer with him"

I absolutely fucking did not, thank you very much
heard george w bush’s voice in the martin scorsese documentary for the first time in years and felt the exact same surge of involuntary hostility towards it that i always used to feel

Or: Why Millennials are Fucked, know it, and have been screaming about it for years.
We have a “poverty trap” and it’s driving the destruction of social cohesion.

The “poverty line” is’t 35,000, it’s $150,000, and making more than one, and less than the other is worse than being “poor”.

Which is why the rage.

I called the Tea Party Nazis in 2009, and had friends decide I was overly dramatic in my political observations.
Remember when we were called “hyperbolic” for referring to these folks as Nazis?

Good times, good times. 🙄

Books that changed me?

Little Women
Anne of Green Gables
Clan of the Cave Bear
A Bright and Shining Lie (read that at 17 and I've been a Democrat ever since)
House of the Spirits
Harry Potter (*sigh*)
Outlander
Uprooted
Literally all of Shakespeare...
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Look. There's a reason we have college majors in theatre and film. There are world-renowned POST GRAD programs in acting.

It. Isn't. Easy.

It isn't easy to do, it isn't easy to make a career out of it, and getting the training isn't easy, either!

And, no, the degrees aren't worthless.
People keep saying this but I strongly disagree that most people can successfully perform an emotion on camera or speaking in front of a crowd if you merely authentically experience that emotion. It's much harder than you think it is. bsky.app/profile/inep...
It's still galling that a Democratic politician would need speech training and acting classes to learn how to convey anger at the demolition of the East Wing of the White House. So many Dem politicians are Turing Test failures, trapped somewhere in the uncanny valley between human and robot.
