and (s.e. knows, but i always wish [yt] urbanites more commonly did)

all kinds of ppl with all kinds of opinions/jobs/identities live in 'rural America'. but systemic agitpropstereotypes to the contrary have been stoked to suit powergrabber entities in their quests to disenfranchise residents
Rural mythmaking and exceptionalism has huge consequences for US culture. At the risk of igniting discourse, you really do need to understand what's happening in rural America, including the fact that it's not a generic monolith although many communities are facing similar issues and themes.

was just talking with fam of boomer generation [the *actual* babyboom not genx repainted] about exactly this

how much $/agents provocateur=behind the algorithmic presentation of topics +opinions

how that impacts the levels+normalization of cruelty that tho part of all history seems accelerated now

…. Imma say it but when do we actually start dealing with the fact a lot of journalists agree or at least find the racists more important than everyone else and are calcifying it

And it’s the same with threads and becoming similar here

And no “ composable moderation” won’t save shit
'Small changes to the tone of posts fed to users of X can increase feelings of political polarisation as much in a week as would have historically taken at least three years, research has found.' 1/3
Small changes to ‘for you’ feed on X can rapidly increase political polarisation
Study finds that a week of political content can bring about a shift in views that previously would have taken three years

This is why OpenAI is selling so aggressively to education at all levels—they want to create entire generations of users incapable of reading, writing and thinking without ChatGPT to hold their hands

And teachers and professors should call this out for what it actually is
To bear out this rosy projection, HSBC assumes that OpenAI will become "as ubiquitous [...] as Microsoft 365" (345mm users worldwide) while bringing in 10x the number of users (3bn).

this is the logical understanding and the fact it's not been mainstream reveals so many systemic/hegemonic intentions around the usefulness of creating underclasses based on arbitrary +shifting metrics of neurological/psychological 'normal'
'The emergence of the neurodiversity movement is challenging the view of ADHD as a disorder that should be ‘treated’, and instead proposes that it’s a difference that should be better understood and supported — with more focus on adapting schools and workplaces, for instance.'
ADHD diagnoses are growing. What’s going on?
More children and adults are being diagnosed with ADHD in some countries. Science is helping to understand why — and how best to provide support.

The folks at @afghanevac.bsky.social have in hand a new USCIS directive which largely targets Afghan refugees who fled the Taliban in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal in 2021.

I guess I now have to do a thread on shoes in ancient Mesopotamia in response to this (which happens to be from one of my favourite accounts).

I’m not an archaeologist, nor do I really know anything about shoes, but let’s go on this journey together.
can't believe this ancient mesopotamia shoe wearing ass said people need to dress up at the airport

So this is a reproductive justice issue too.
In Morrow County, healthy adults were coming down with unexplained medical conditions, including diseases that usually afflicted the elderly.

In a survey of 30 homes, at least 25 miscarriages and a half dozen people living with one kidney were reported.

side note/also they should maybe stop engineering stuff to be increasingly invasive while also increasingly hairtearingly dysfunctional? ijs
It's not just "consumer smart" it reduces environmental waste, key materials are often mined in slave conditions. The whole tenor of the article is wrong - why is the economy so dependent on us engaging in mass waste?

Look, I am very small potatoes as an author. I make too little in royalties to live off them. But I can tell you the reason I got to write my 2nd book was bc the sales of the 1st were very good. That's what else you're eating into by pirating, our ability to keep writing what you claim to love.

LRS if like me you've never rly been a drinker/etc you already know the amount of discomfort that causes ppl who are (it's how they bond?)

but for anyone who has had to fight for their sobriety it is actively harmful when drinkers/etc leverage peer pressure to try getting everyone around to join in

evergreen
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.
