I've been saying to friends for a few months that the more I study authoritarianism in other countries, the more concerned I become that the CBS story is the sleeping giant here. The process has been a simmer (people inside the network have spoken out in real-time) but don't mistake slow for safe.
One of the first things Vladimir Putin did on becoming president was take over NTV, the TV channel that hosted a satirical puppet show because he didn't like the Putin doll and how he was portrayed. He arrested NTV's owner and only released him when he signed the channel over. #Colbert

Seizure ... by whom? If we're asserting that the money is safer in Qatar than the US, that suggests that it is being protected because Qatar has something the US lacks — presumably a lack of accountability to American courts and Congress. www.semafor.com/article/01/1...

When I taught self defense, I would explain a common reaction many people have when they realize they're being targeted: they tend to pretend it's not happening, hoping the problem will go away on its own. There are a lot of ways to respond, but convincing yourself to ignore the threat is dangerous.

I've been telling people that the reason this is happening in no small part is because they see urban white Minnesotans as race traitors. For having a semi-integrated society at all, but also for 2020.

About once a week, I think about an essay @sifill.bsky.social published last Feb., warning that Trump was dismantling the 14th Amendment. The eleven months since have shown that race – the denial of full citizenship to non-white people – remains the most salient piece of his quest for dominion.

I’ve been sadder, more depressed, more anxious many times in my life.

But after the ICE Gestapo invasion of our city this week, I don’t think I’ve ever been ANGRIER. Actively fighting what seems to be an unhealthy level but also holding on to what feels sane and appropriate.

It’s fun, man.

The laws of armed conflict forbid combatants from feigning civilian status.

Fantastic piece and good quote from @marisakabas.bsky.social: “Being independent is a form of resistance in that it’s going up against the old ways of practicing journalism,” she said. “I feel like I have more latitude to come at systems of power, because I’m not answering to anyone.”

“She described for me the powerful magnet that Hitler was to German youth. The youth had lost their sense of belonging. They did not count; there was no center of hope for their marginal egos.
