The universe winds down. That's how it's made.
But memory is everything to lose;
Although some of the colors have to fade,
Do not believe you'll get the chance to choose.
Regret, by definition, comes too late;
Say what you mean. Bear witness. Iterate.

Can you EVEN IMAGINE living in a society where differently gendered people take on community roles that are best suited for their entire experiences and are respected for their specialities?

Finds Them and Kills Them as a band name feels like cultural appropriation so I’m just going to say that someone for whom that is not cultural appropriation should absolutely start that band because that name is rad as hell.

FINDS THEM AND KILLS THEM

"Finds Them and Kills Them (Osh-Tisch) looked like a man, but wore women's clothing and had the heart of a woman.... she was brave and good."
― Pretty Shield

Her strength as a warrior is what earned her the name Osh-Tisch, which translates to “finds them and kills them."
Who is Osh-Tisch?
Osh-Tisch was a Apsáalooke Badé, a role within the Crow Nation that defied traditional gender norms, embodying both masculine and feminine qualities. Before colonization, Badé were deeply respected for their unique spiritual gifts, artistry, and contributions to community life.
As a Badé, Osh-Tisch carried responsibilities tied to culture, ceremony, and social balance. Their life shows how many of our nations embraced gender diversity long before Western colonial powers imposed rigid binaries.

About 10 years ago, someone about 10 years younger than me told me his favorite author was Cormac McCarthy.

His story is not mine to tell, but let’s just say that his life since then has been the life of a young Cormac McCarthy fan.

everyone at a certain age just starts reading books called, like, 'the nice man in the cosy book cafe with finger warmers and fresh bread'. no one over fifty has time for blood meridian.

We’ve got it all backwards. Youth lit should be all Thomas Hardy and On the Beach, because the youth can handle it - everything feels that dire to them. Grownups should get more cute little stories that end well.

I need to know what Bob Hoskins said to Princess Diana in front of Roger Rabbit at the London premiere of WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (1988).
Bob Hoskins meets Princess Diana as a full size Roger Rabbit costumed character stands next to them.

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.
Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.

The Strib’s Karen Tolkkinen has devoted column after column after column to her stubborn belief that trans kids are destroying opportunities for girls to compete in sports at school.

It’s her weird mission. She’s fucking obsessed.

Anyway, great letter from Max Maher today.
Karen Tolkkinen's column "Transgender athletes should not compete with girls, but everyone deserves a place to play" (StarTribune.com, Oct. 9) builds its case on emotion, not evi-dence. She acknowledges that "nobody knows how common" transgender athletes are in Minnesota, yet argues for restrictive policies anyway. That's not fairness; that's fear.

There's also no evidence that transgender participation has taken opportunities from anyone. The Minnesota State High School League already reviews eligibility case by case to ensure both inclusion and competitive balance. The system is working as intended - quietly and responsibly.

The idea that girls are being forced to sacrifice is a political talking point, not a measurable fact. What's really being asked of us is whether we believe every student deserves a place to belong, even those whose identity or experience we may not fully understand.

High school sports were never just about winning. They teach teamwork, discipline and self-respect, lessons that lose meaning if we start excluding students who simply want to play. Protecting opportunity for all young people is how we strengthen fairness, not weaken it.

Reupping for today: a thread below on how a Wisconsin county’s myth and image for itself imploded after recent investigations determined the “friendly” Native chief at the center of its identity never existed. www.waupacanow.com/stories/chie...

A little thread about how attitudes, and markers, change. In July 2024 I went to see the Chief Waupaca marker and site in Waupaca County, Wisc., expecting to see the problematic marker in brown and instead got a different and nuanced story in blue — including that Chief Waupaca never existed. 1/🧵
Original Chief Waupaca historical marker, Marion, Wisconsin. It tells the story of a “friendly Potawatomi Indian” who accepted white settlers as others in his tribe did not, and that he and two of his sons are buried at the site. Entry to Chief Waupaca Historical Site, Marion, Wisconsin. I took this in July 2024. I did not hunt or camp. Current marker at Chief Waupaca Historical Site, Marion, Wisconsin. It tells the story of the myth of Chief Waupaca, where the word Waupaca came from, a detailed history of the Menominee in the region. Taken July 2024.

if you restrict basically basically all literature written in the past 50 years to one class called “Contemporary Literature” and then not let students take it until their senior year of high school, you doing them an immense disservice and are going to make them hate reading.

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.
