Another social media, another intro. I’m Jared. I make RPGs, write about motorbike racing and fix servers for a living. You may know me from the other social medias.
This brings another point to the fore: how many RPGs are literally subsidised by their creators? When creators can’t make a living doing games, they’ll effectively make them for free.

Full-time publishers have to compete with amateurs that give their work away for free. It’s hard for everyone.
And printing isn’t exactly cheap in these numbers.

Can even 1% of RPG creators (writers, illustrators, editors, layouters, ...) make a living off of this gig?

An RPG book costs less than the Dominos order for the gaming table.
The dirty secret of RPG publishing is that books are too cheap. Prices for books haven’t gone up since before Brexit while the costs to make the books have. And by so much it’s not even funny.
There’s this core contradiction in RPG design where the medium is scrappy as hell, and requires little more than some scribbles and a dream, but the commercial products are pricey and tremendously polished.

It’s easy to see, and upon seeing it, the first instinct is usually that Something Is Wrong.

What does this mean for creators?

DO NOT WORK FOR CORPORATIONS.

They will feed your art into their shit-AI machines to try to spin gold, fail, and take you, and your art, with them when it tanks.

Create art for you. Sell directly to your audience. Ignore the "market".

You can do this.
Not surprised, of course. But still. Steal from the creators who made your company what it is at a large enough scale, and you reward the thieves with wealth the likes of which none of us will ever see.

I love this, so it cost more, took more time, looked worse and everyone STILL hated it. I can see why so many people think it’s the future 😂😂

Steve Jobs, as problematic as he was, had a way with words. One of his many pithy phrases that stuck with me was “real artists ship” from 1983, just before the Mac came out.

I have it pinned to my office door so see it as I leave.

This applies to RPG publishing as much as any artistic endeavour …

This is an interesting selection of riders to advertise MotoGP’s 2026 championship. There’s a rider there that’s never even started a GP race.

Very smart marketing to put him on the advert.

I have opinions on this: www.artnews.com/art-news/new...

I believe that this generation of billionaires that will buy these paintings won’t do what the original billionaire-equivalent collectors did. They won’t bequeath them to museums and will keep them hidden in perpetuity.

Fucking parasites.
