Pretty good writer. Reasonably competent HusbandParentMusician. Passable teacher. Old, stubborn, and grumpy. Forever fighting book bans, ignorance, and cruelty. He/Him.

Been working on a new MG manuscript, and @lancerubinparty.bsky.social is my favorite YA/MG writer . . . so this was nice to get.

Electric Kingdom by David Arnold was full of multidimensional characters (the first generation whose only world was this fly-pocalypse), kids fighting past isolation to build community, a unique take on time travel, and a story that never went where I thought it would. Great for grades 8-up.

Such a great writer. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead was such an early example for me of what comedy could be.

A reminder, too, that he ran on this. It wasn’t a secret. They had “mass deportation now” signs everywhere.

That voice telling you not to lift a finger to stop them? That wasn’t your conscience.
A reminder for those who are not aware: "remigration" is the process of deporting all non-white people from a country. It includes citizens and is, by definition, ethnic cleansing.

And to be clear: this is not fake. I just screenshot it myself.

Candace, The Universe, And Everything @misssmith11.bsky.social is a perfect time travel story, and fits between that YA/MG space publishing seems to avoid.

Also, I picked it up because it was blurbed by my favorites: @laurelsnyder.bsky.social @anneursu.bsky.social @erinentrada.bsky.social 💜💜💜

I am not a very good trumpet player, but I've been making music with it for the past five years (after a 25 year hiatus), and nothing brings me more peace than the noise from that trumpet.

Make something. Be human.
I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

I hate that I watched this movie. I hate myself so much right now.
Watching the latest Jurassic . . .

Hot take: If a product-placement Snickers wrapper can destroy your containment protocols . . . you should not be in charge of making super-mutant dinosaurs.

I got an abnormally large advance ($100k) for my debut duology I sold two years ago. Minus taxes and my agent’s cut, I've seen roughly 50% of that (last chunk is paid out when I submit the complete (edited, not just drafted) second book. First book isn't out until next spring.

I have two day jobs.

The next 30 minutes is a beat for beat remake of JAWS, but with bigger dinosaur jaws, and as Scarlett Johansson as Roy Scheider.

On this Trans Day of Remembrance, I would have you remember that there are trans people alive who need your action now, not your reflective words later.

Remembering us is not enough.

As an 8th grade teacher, this is the first year in a decade that I haven't had any openly trans students in my classes. It's sad that these kids who were feeling they could more safely be themselves, now have to hide themselves away.
This has been one of the hardest years to be transgender in nearly a century. Today we remember all the sisters and brothers we've lost to the surging tide of hate, and redouble our resolve to support and defend one another at a time when few others will. Hold out. We'll see the other side together.

Watched The Beast In Me, and mostly liked it. Just wondering why so many shows have like some big flashback episode right before the finale, especially one that no one needs, and the narrative doesn’t need either.

When I think of AI I think of Prince being asked about holograms of dead celebrities:

“That's the most demonic thing imaginable.… If I was meant to jam with Duke Ellington, we would have lived in the same age. That whole virtual reality thing... it really is demonic. And I am not a demon."

this is truly one of my favorite episodes of the year, where Sarah and I get a chance to talk about our favorite books published in 2025. ❤️
It's that time of year! We're talking about the Best Romance Novels of 2025. We've chosen ten books that we love and that cover a range of historical, contemporary and paranormal, featuring romance with werewolves and cowboys, vaudeville actresses and vikings, Dukes and the actual Devil.
