While we're giving thanks ...

If you pick up a book by an indie trans author, they'll be thankful for the sale, while you'll be thankful for a good read!
On that note:

Trans authors (I mean authors who are trans, NOT cis people who write about trans people), drop your book links here and I'll try to repost as many as I can throughout the day.

Cis people: Repost trans authors' book links.

Cis people who want to complain about being excluded: gtfo
Being a trans author is fucking weird right now. Hell is actively unfolding all around us but I still need to be like, "hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book? It won't make anything better, but it's kinda fun?"

So....hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book?

For like the zillionth time: Libraries are FREE for you, but WE still get compensated for our work!!
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

tldr Poverty line is calculated as 3x a year’s food budget b/c the calculation dates to the 60s when food was 1/3 of spending. Food is now 1/16 of spending due to other costs rising hugely, so the official US poverty line for a family of 4 is $35,000 but updating the logic it should be $140,000!
We have a “poverty trap” and it’s driving the destruction of social cohesion.

The “poverty line” is’t 35,000, it’s $150,000, and making more than one, and less than the other is worse than being “poor”.

Which is why the rage.

Ever since I learned this, I have made a point to preorder books from authors and artists I follow from my local bookstore. Often, they'll order an extra copy or two to stock on the shelves. It's crazy how low the number is to make a tangible difference!
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I had a supportive spouse, a solid career and a workplace that gave me a foundation to swing from.

I also got very lucky and my books ended up in front of a lot of eyeballs looking for something like them.

The luck quotient to a creative career is huge.
Yes, and also recognize that with creative fields, survivorship bias is real: You hear about full-time creatives with envious career arcs precisely because they've survived in the field where others (for whatever reason and independent of quality of work) have not. This is an important fact.
Would-be/struggling writers can feel like losers or wannabes when they read about other writers writing "full time" or promo'ing their book in various exotic cities. And it's good to recognize that, yeah, sometimes there's another income (or a spouse is helping to pay the bills).

@tkingfisher.com may well be pleased to know that the Digger omnibus just claimed a blood sacrifice to be unpacked.

I'm sure it's not a contribution to some massive wombat ritual requiring human blood.

We have allowed the doorstop kitty to become a snob, who insists on exactly the right consistency of her wet food.

Sounds like victory to me!
I love it when little garbage cats develop the luxury of food snobbery. Yes he was tiny wet ball of fleas found in a ditch but now he's a velvet prince who wants the premium, organic, grain-free chicken in gravy, NOT the premium, organic, grain-free chicken au jus how dare you offer that garbage.

1. I see elsewhere on Bluesky that the discourse has turned toward telling writers not to be ashamed to admit they have day jobs or other sources of income (or spousal/family financial support), and you know what, that's 100% correct. Day jobs and support from loved ones are great if you have them!

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Unpacking. Thought a box was empty, but it actually contained a tiny squid a friend gave us.

Squid went skittering across the floor, heading for the couch.

Freya intercepted it.

She seemed confused when I fussed over her for being a good girl as I took it away.
