Hey everyone, Todd with Air and Nothingness Press has had a rough 2025, and he's looking for a little financial help for his mother during her move to LTC.

The goal is modest, and I know even $5 can help a lot.
My family is looking to raise money to cover a funding gap until long-term health insurance begins for my mother who is in an assisted living facility. Thank you for considering helping us out. We appreciate it. As with many in our situation I've launched a GoFundMe page - gofund.me/ace67ba35

Using the belief that creators are the "petite bourgeoisie" to justify pirating books/stealing art is EXACTLY what makes it so hard for anyone who isn't rich to pursue their creative dreams

If you steal our art, you PERSONALLY are preventing us from building sustainable careers
Honestly, people calling creators the "petite bourgeoisie" makes me want to snap.

We're working folk. And we work really hard. For next to nothing.

We're not lounging around eating bonbons. We're trying to figure out how we're going to be able to pay rent next month.

I imagine most of the people trying to claim that stealing indie ebooks is leftism simply have never had to worry about paying rent or for groceries but sorry, your desire for free luxury goods is outweighed by the material needs of their creators

i've seen people making the argument that it's a result of everyone being broke now, but like, this round was set off in part by piracy of an indie ebook that was on sale for 99 cents

there is a vast and deep well of genuinely free, no-piracy-needed stuff out there

I know we're tired and done discoursing, but I still had some thoughts circling my head while baking today because it kept me thinking about Friday.

As a preteen, a bunch of my friends shoplifted for the fun of it. (I didn't, but I also didn't stop them.) Probably a rite of passage for some.

Anybody who is like “Piracy is activism!”—trust me, supporting your local library is about 1000% more effective activism, and it’s still free for you and authors still get paid!

REMINDER: if you think your right-on lefty/socialist/communist/etc. politics justifies pirating books, well guess what? Most writers don't make a living wage from their books or writing work, and stealing from them makes you a class traitor.

Anyway, here's a long thread I did last year on out-of-print work, copyright, death of the author, etc, because I do have experience in this area.
"At least Skyla is done with discourse, surely she can't have more to say--"

NOPE, NOT DONE YET, HOLD ON AND LET ME GET MY COFFEE.

I'm taking this sentiment at face value and trust it's meant in earnest: "Copyright should end upon the death of the author and then the book goes into public domain."

Before I go to bed:

"It's okay to pirate if the author is dead!"

So I'd just like to point out that my aunt Judy passed ten years ago last May and I still don't have out the last out-of-print book because I simply cannot afford the time to scan the text, edit/correct errors, design/format etc.

Some people are very good at writing sex and some people are good at believing that they are good at writing sex, the first is a tremendously impressive skill and the second is what makes for deeply uncomfortable author presentations at science fiction conventions
There's nothing wrong with literary porn, but some of the crap those guys wrote was "Have you actuallly ever HAD sex?"

My genuine advice to people who want new releases fresh from the oven is become a reviewer and get arcs. Then you get to be ahead of everybody.

You do kinda have to get along with authors for this to work the best that it can tho.
