This is yet another reminder that the "you can just walk around with your papers and be fine!" is a lie: the cops routinely claim whatever documentation you provide is invalid

It's racism all the way down

"During the encounter, Greeley said they told her she 'doesn’t look like' a Greeley."

www.yahoo.com/news/article...
Chicago Tribune: Greeley, who was born at Illinois Masonic hospital and is adopted, carries a copy of her passport just in case she runs into federal agents.

“I am Latina and I am a service worker,” Greeley said. “I fit the description of what they’re looking for now.”

During the encounter, Greeley said they told her she “doesn’t look like” a Greeley.

“They said this isn’t real, they kept telling me I’m lying, I’m a liar,” Greeley recalled. “I told them to look in the rest of my wallet, I have my credit cards, my insurance.”

The Texas National Guard sent home seven soldiers whose fitness levels seemingly “did not meet mission requirements” for their deployment to Illinois, a Texas Military Department spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. The decision comes after some soldiers were ridiculed on social media.
7 Texas National Guard members in Illinois replaced for ‘not meeting mission standards’ when it came to physical fitness
The Texas National Guard removed seven soldiers from Illinois amid questions about their physical fitness. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called it a return to “standards.”

I wish we still had journalists... A journalist would've followed up with this question.

Can someone explain to me which are "Democrat programs" and which are "Republican programs"?

After bragging about permanently cutting "Democrat programs," Trump says "we're not closing up Republican programs."

what “wave of violence against ICE”?

Free speech except about the administration.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi

@AGPamBondi
Today following outreach from
@thejusticedept
, Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target
@ICEgov
 agents in Chicago.

The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk just for doing their jobs. The Department of Justice will continue engaging tech companies to eliminate platforms where radicals can incite imminent violence against federal law enforcement.

There is no compelling legal or moral argument available. By all accounts, these boats are unarmed and not threatening in a way that requires self-defense. If smuggling was a legitimate concern, the U.S. Navy might board and inspect a ship in U.S. waters instead of murdering everyone.
chrislhayes.bsky.social
Unless and until some kind of compelling legal and moral argument is presented as to why this is a legitimate use of deadly force, this is just…mass murder.

I'm generalizing, but why do conservatives remember political irritations for so much longer than liberals?

It's been 17 years since Obama said some voters "cling to their guns, to their religion" and I heard a senator denounce that last month.

Obvious theory: Media ecosystem puts it on repeat

I'm sorry, is the Trump Administration talking to a tech platform?

Is it...requesting content moderation?

Just so everyone is clear, the main issue in the Supreme Court voting rights case tomorrow is whether it's racist against white people to enforce the Voting Rights Act.

I'm dead serious. We live in incredibly stupid times.

Speaker Mike Johnson just said he's completely fine with ICE agents shooting priests in the head with pepper balls and roughing up journalists.

I'm sure he'll tell us soon about how it's the Democrats who are waging a war on religion and free speech though.

Q: We've seen images out of Chicago of federal agents shooting faith leaders with pepper balls and arresting journalists. Where's the limit for you on what's acceptable conduct by federal agents?

MIKE JOHNSON: I've not seen them cross the line yet.

Great thread on the deliberate, continued erosion of the Voting Rights Act by GOP appointees on SCOTUS. I fully expect the Calvinball 6 to kill Section 2. But even if by some miracle they don’t, they ought not be lauded, much less trusted, because they made Trump a king.
kevintmorris.bsky.social
Tomorrow, SCOTUS will hear arguments in Louisiana v. Callais, a major threat to (what remains of) the 1965 Voting Rights Act. But this isn't the first time the VRA has faced dire threats; in 2013 and 2021, SCOTUS weakened other provisions. We can learn from those why Callais could be so dangerous 🧵

Oliver Willis is right. This also applies to the podcasts these 4W types (white, wealthy, well-meaning, and wrong) insist that Democrats should regularly appear on now.
owillis.bsky.social
appearing on fox's airwaves validates them as a source of information to their audience. they lie all day and then they can tell their audience "see, we're not fake, we tell so much truth about dems that the party chair, house leader, major candidates, etc all have to come here and defend themself"
bjkeefe.bsky.social
Don't agree with @owillis.bsky.social on this. First, not everyone who watches Fox is devout. People plopped in front of their TVs cannot be equated with people on a pilgrimage to Mecca. That's just silly.

And I don't see how it "reinforces the lies much more". (He does not explain this.)

It's also worth reiterating that absent this reprogramming authority being written into law it would be not just illegal but flatly unconstitutional for DoD to expend money in any fashion not explicitly specified (by both type/use and quantity) by Congress in an appropriations bill
mikeblack114.bsky.social
Since we're getting a crash course in DoD reprogramming authority, CRS has a good report on it linked below. Some important points:

Congress gives DoD reprogramming authority because when you're dealing with a trillion dollars, some stuff is probably going to need to be changed over 12 months

since there's reports on social media of money hitting accounts worth reiterating that this is illegal and unconstitutional as shit, it's not a close question, and while I don't expect anyone on H/SASC or H/SAC will do anything, anyone performing this 'reprogramming' should face criminal penalties

WaPo covers their actual local area too poorly to be worth reading for that anymore. I get more useful DC coverage from Wired. The Baltimore Banner started covering my home county. Bezos doesn’t care. The place could easily be bankrupt by the time Trump is out of office.
