"Sometimes things are hard or unfair but reality and science don't care"

one million times this

I am genuinely sorry this is how the universe works but it is indeed how the universe works, and the sooner more people get hip to this the healthier and happier we collectively all will be.
juliadoubleday.bsky.social
The framing “it’s unreasonable to ask me to mask” reminds me of climate change discussions - “it’s unreasonable to ask for net zero” etc - bc ppl think of the politics as more “real” than the science. Sometimes things are hard or unfair but reality and science don’t care

Just so everyone is clear, the main issue in the Supreme Court voting rights case tomorrow is whether it's racist against white people to enforce the Voting Rights Act.

I'm dead serious. We live in incredibly stupid times.

I've sewn dresses, shirts, skirts, pajamas, and underwear.

I've bought patterns for bras but haven't tackled that challenge yet. They are complicated and physics defying at my size. I know enough to be happy to just buy them for $100.

Because people are not static boxes! We have curves and move.

I've made delicate pieces with my grandma's old cabinet machine and hacked together crappy pieces with my "new" computerized machine.

I'm jealous of my bestie who found a serger in a pawn shop for $70! The only thing wrong with it is that it has to be rethreaded. If you know, you know.
geekgalgroks.bsky.social
The art of taking flat two dimensional pieces and turning it into 3 dimensions depends on way more than just the sewing machine.

The math! The geometry! The knowledge of fabrics! The knowledge of seams!
gaudipern.bsky.social
All of this to say: Any sewist who has made more than the most rudimentary projects will likely laugh themselves to tears if you suggest that the solution to clothing prices is to just make "better sewing machines." I'm sure your heart is in a good place, but you definitely have never sewn anything.

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

I am seeing a lot of people reposting Lakota Man today bc it's Indigenous Peoples Day. A reminder that he is not well liked amongst many (most?) Natives on social media. Many of us blocked him a long time ago. Some of the reasons why are in this article.

www.dailydot.com/irl/lakotama...
Who is LakotaMan, the user behind one of the most popular Native American accounts on X?
John Martin is adored by white X users—but infamous among Native and Indigenous communities.

I am very tired of this, but a quick review.

In America, it is legal for you to own your bullshit laser, no matter how it got into the county.

How you use your bullshit laser matters. Most jurisdictions escalate to felony for lighting up any law enforcement. Doing to them in the sky is ++Felony.

This is such an astoundingly bad idea that I kinda think it’s a false flag or an op of some sort

Merits aside, it is insanely easy to be caught if you do this and the punishment for doing this is much more severe than you’d guess.

'I am depleting my savings...' Do y'all understand the gravity of this? The lengths people have to go to in order to stay in business? In order to continue paying their bills? If the price is too high, move along, find it elsewhere, but don't harass the shop owners to lower their prices.
bibiblossoms.bsky.social
I am moving to using a US Fullfiment Centre for US customers. It will take weeks to fully implement. I am having to pay several thousands for the shipping of products to the US and the custom fees. I am depleting my savings. I am scared and stressed. I just wish people could see that I'm trying.

This.

One of the weirdest claims about tech, is that if people only studied humanities, they would be more inclusive and kind.

No.

That's not the important dimension. Studying art or philosophy or history does not magically make you an ethical person.

Hitler was a painter. Wagner was a composer.
brasidas.bsky.social
Anyone who claims that Silicon Valley would be better with more humanities education has to grapple with the fact that Peter Thiel was a philosophy major.

Today was leg press and OMFG it is so much easier and less weird to leg press without a port.

It comes down to needing to pick more people to care about because they're coming for us all.

It's not mutual aid because that person's not part of your community apparently even though you see them online, but why don't people get that we must expand our notion of community & get out of who white capitalism says is it is even to band together to get through our fascist predicament.

When Trump was elected, I decided I would try to put my column writing energy towards somewhere local. I wanted to write in my communities about stuff that was happening.

Not all plans work out, but this one seems to be so far. I am looking forward to a slightly more formal process.

Any revolution, purple or otherwise, that demands those impacted by harm extend the benefit of the doubt to or assume “positive intent” from those who championed, sanctioned, or ignored that harm, without observable contrition and a strategy for repair that doesn’t center them,

Exactly!

My cable bin is sacred and every few years I end up pulling out a cable I haven't used in a decade that is just the right thing for a project. Keep all the cables!

The concept of the 'deserving poor' is capitalist poison. Your worth isn't determined by how hard you fight or how much you suffer. My worth is non-negotiable. Aid isn't a reward for being a 'good' survivor; it’s a necessary tool for being an alive survivor. Solidarity disregards the purity test.

Holy shit, Fr Dowling.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

Good news everybody!

My liver enzyme numbers are finally back in range!

It just took over two and a half months after my last chemo. Which in good news means all the things I am doing is helping, but also means all the things I am doing is helping.

So yay, I continue to be spite vegan....

Welp, that was a hard therapy session.

I don't think my therapist was prepared for me to name off so many different weight loss programs that my mom was in during the 90s.

I didn't grow up with an almond mom, because nuts were expensive and only for holidays.

Also the food shelf didn't have them.
