I have big Cradle Catholic With A Mathematics Degree energy
ok I guess I'm just gonna...go continue taking care of my sick body by eating dinner and hope my home state figures out how to protect itself from impending federal invasion

This wasn't for me so I'll hold my own opinions on it

How are Minnesotans feeling about being called to document ICE's crimes? It's important but do you feel like he appreciated that he was asking civilians to put their bodies on the line?

But I want to say this plainly: leadership moments like this are revealing. They show us who is willing to absorb discomfort for the sake of the institution, and who is not. Sameer demonstrated that willingness. He modeled what it looks like to put the city first, even at personal cost.

I suspect "did Owendoff write this?" is gonna be a running joke for a long, long time
TKL
- we haven’t been perfect, but Shr and EPG worked hard. Appreciate her support for Dunphy. Excited to have president from D1.

Ryan
- I’m the last to know on things and we’re supposed to vote our conscience. Have questions

Watching half of Portland City Council as good as admit the only progressive they'd ever vote for for Council Pres is a white man is just so damning

And they (the conservative half of the council) don't even have the good sense to be embarrassed about it

I cannot believe @councilordanryan.bsky.social is texting in a Council meeting not even 24 hrs after that Mercury story broke

Seriously, WHAT?
Nobody looks happy right now as Taylor gives them options of how to proceed. Looks like Ryan is texting.

Sooo, is this the sort of "leadership" choices we could expect from Smith were she elected Council President?

Because if so...how is any councilor voting for her with a straight face
Smith wants a recess so she can figure out how to sue the city of Portland.

[this is Zimmerman & EPG’s candidate for president. This is embarrassing.]

imo wanting the Mayor to choose Council President is disqualifying for any candidate.

It misreads and/or undermines the role and responsibilities of City Council: legislation, appropriations, oversight.

Absolutely prohibited for a reason!

I wish I had adequate support, instead of just having to be alone and terrified so much of the time

could really use hugs on days where it feels like my body is one tiny wrong move away from flipping an ER-visit-sized table
January 14, 2026 at 5:44 PM
can you believe this guy?!

the freakin audacity
Councilor Ryan wants to add a Mayor tie-breaking vote for Councilor President and VP elections.

"Kate why have you been hanging around bsky from like 4:30p Pacific til now"

well you see, my body is generally throwing fits as I treat my Lyme, and this time it involved waking up to a neck that's so out it feels like my heart isn't "online" and while I've had it before, it's scary--

Can someone help Caitlin out with gas money? 💜 (I'd chip in but I'm rapidly approaching financial precarity myself sadly)
I have no clue how I'm going to get to Phoenix and back home tomorrow.

The appointment is a f/u with my hematologist and it has already been pushed back a month so it needs to happen.
We need cat food for our limited diet cat. $36 will allow us to buy it locally or it's on the Amazon list.

I have to make a trip to Phoenix this week & again next week for me & 1 of the kids, so help w/gas for each trip would be much appreciated - $120 for both

100% thug theater, but it's hard to see how this will go well for DHS/ICE/CBP.

Otherwise apolitical Americans will not take kindly to delayed flights and missed connections just because masked agents want to check the IDs that both airline staff AND TSA have already checked.

this is why everybody needs a math nerd friend or a scientific literature of some sort nerd friend

it's bullshit out there, dangerous to go alone
This is the equivalent of saying you just invented the Tampa 2.

The same people who made their political bones by labeling errors made in Covid preventions and predictions as ”lies” have chosen to use their newfound positions of power to completely lie about things that have existed for decades.

every person who grew up in a place that was cold enough to have gotten their tongue frozen as a kid just simultaneously cringed and cheered lol

I'm gonna be honest, I completely forgot tech bros were also trying to make VR metaverse a thing

that's the thing about full-court presses, like we're seeing with gen AI--you can only do one at a time

I've been telling folks I think this year is going to be *very* economically rough in the US, but I did not clock that even rich people may already be feeling the squeeze

Damn right we voted for this change 💪

This is a spot-on statement!
"But here's the thing: Portland voted for this change. Our communities built this council. And we're not letting backroom racism tear down what we fought so hard to create,” said Political, Policy, Advocacy and Civic Engagement Director Kaliko Castille.

Hey District 3 and 4 folks! Given today's Mercury article, good time as ever to support the progressive councilors we want to see remain on City Council, yeah? 🫡
If this is the type of representation you want to see on Portland City Council, consider donating to my campaign! Your first $25 are matched 10-1, and all candidates in Districts 3 and 4 are up for re-election in 2026.

I want to explain why the messages published today matter. Not just because they’re offensive, but because they rely on very old racist tropes that are still used to undermine people of color (especially women) when we hold power. 🧵
The Mercury has obtained a series of images of group messages that show racist, sexist, and homophobic tropes used by a local developer and other local conservative political activists during a council president election. Readers may find this content offensive.
