Writing a novel is just writing fan fiction except you're the only fan

General: Bad news, Pennywise. The Russkies are beating us in the clown race. They're developing their own clown. Code name Smirnov.

Pennywise [reading dossier] "In Soviet Russia, clown laughs at you." What is this shit?

General: They're laughing at America, Pennywise. They're laughing at Freedom.
I can't wait! I'm really rooting for these weirdos

Okay I’ve got this great idea for a podcast where we —
FT columnist Janan Ganesh recently wrote of his conversion to the 'Great Man' theory of history - but only a minority agree

-History is primarily shaped by major figures: 27%
-Primarily shaped by broad social / economic / cultural / tech changes: 51%

part of why i find the idea that certain tech is inevitable (LMS, AI, etc) to be silly is we're not far removed from the before times. we have it in recent and living memory how we function without these things. i graduated from college in 2013. we had reading packets and printed our assignments

The entire "free speech on campus" moral panic was manufactured to blackmail us into making space in intellectual life for bigots and charlatans who couldn't get there on their own merits. Its a DEI scheme for fascism. Congratulations to everyone who took it at face value.
“Following his lecture, Yarvin will debate the legendary British historian David Starkey on history and the future of conservatism.” Everything about this is so cursed. Masks off at the University of Oxford.
Distinguishing an established canon of literature is actually very useful as a personal exercise and is a great way to represent yourself.

Compiling a broad canon of literature and claiming universality is a fool's errand.

I don't care whether or not a work is a "classic." Tell me why YOU like it.

books should have an anti-acknowledgements section where the author talks shit about all the people who fucked them over while they were trying to write the thing. not bc I personally want to write one but bc I love gossip

pleased to announce that there seems to be a passive-aggressive conflict roiling the august pages of Cooks Illustrated, Fall Harvest recipes edition. allow me to explain:

Political parties must shift immediately and dramatically to the left to avoid alienating these frustrated and abandoned young women. Am I doing this right?
Our recent poll found that women 28 and younger skew substantially more left than the national average. Nearly 80 percent of Gen Z women want abortion to be legal and seven in 10 want gender-affirming care to be accessible for trans adults.
Gen Z women are the most liberal group in the country
On issues like abortion and gender-affirming care, women 28 and younger skew substantially more left than the national average.

I’m so sorry but being a little contrarian edgekid (not OP) about No Kings doesn’t make you look cooler or like a more serious political actor. The frog suits are good. The grannies and “wine moms” are good. Looking cuddly and goofy is a legitimate protest tactic in the face of tyranny. Grow up.
I'm seeing a lot of criticism of the No Kings stuff. A lot of it is very valid I agree. But I also feel like there needs to be a nuanced understanding that these events are still a net positive I feel like. because it gets the liberal folks, the wine moms the grandmas the van dads out there.

I saw a tragically AI-generated version of this poster, so I have recreated a 100% human-made version for all your protest sign needs.

“When they rob us of art and emotion, that leads us towards the aesthetics of fascism. In this film, all the sets are real, the decor is human-sized, there are painstakingly created miniatures... It’s there to remind us that art is not only necessary, it is urgent. And AI can go fuck itself!”

In this piece I deconstruct traditional standards of pet photography, leading the viewer to question what elements differentiate a good photo from a bad one, and whether the presentation of something as art is itself a component of art
It's him. The mobster lobster himself. Don Zoidberg
I've also not read it for a similar reason, but regardless we shouldn't let our lack of surprise distract us from the fact that it's bad for the nasty worm log to be in the kitchen.

That's not where where worm logs go.
haven’t read that young republican politico piece yet. i think mostly because it doesn’t appear to contain any novel information for me. like yeah if you flip over a log you see lots of nasty worms?? shrug
"If he squeals then he'll be squawkin' with the seagulls." *intimidating lobster sounds*
As mama always said: don't put all your revenges in one grave.
Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. One for practice and the other one is the "main" grave.
As a white man, I know a thing or two about being a talentless hack. That's why I'm throwing my support behind this Barry Whyse person.

Good luck at CBTS, Barry!
