brunette woman with shoulder-length bob holds her fingers splayed against her lips

she wears a black and white swimsuit featuring the sesame street characters Bert and Ernie overlaid on a gunfight scene in the movie Pulp Fiction. they wear suits and ties, have gangster hairstyles and both have guns raised.

she has a black ink rose and moth tattoo on one arm.

every single time I check the federal reserve's "Distribution of Household Wealth in the U.S." graph, I think for a second that "bottom 50%" is the bottom big slice- and then realize in horror that it's the tiny sliver at the bottom
thoughtrise.bsky.social
yes, i'm aware that wealth isn't straight money, but for purposes of what we mean, yes it is

financial resources with which to acquire goods and services

we need to stop participating in the language game of our oppressors

(it's not money, it's unrealised gains!) (yeah, you can buy shit with it)
thoughtrise.bsky.social
more clearly framed:

the US has approximately 342 million people.

400 people in the US have more money than 171 million people *combined*
rbreich.bsky.social
The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion.

The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion.

Read that back.

When 400 people control more wealth than half a country’s population, we have a very serious problem.

GenAI truly was the worst technology to come along at this moment.

An energy and water guzzler when we most urgently need to take climate action.

A disinformation machine as our journalism fails.

A bias machine as fascism takes root.

A job killer in a cost of living crisis.

The "cognitive decline and brain damage from repeat COVID infections" and "easy to use robot that makes slop and melts your critical thinking skills" is a hell of a combo in a post-fact media ecosystem

i know perhaps the scariest creepiest real life supernatural story ever told + documented in court by police officials, doctors & witnesses

i started working on a podcast about it many years ago but it became hard to rationalise putting a public spotlight on someone's trauma

it's tricky stuff

Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world,... I feel like I can't take it. And my heart is just going to cave in.
thoughtrise.bsky.social
anyway. just a thing i was thinking about today. a story and a period in my life i forgot existed, left to dust. in pursuit of ethics, but whose?

i think it's an important story. one of the most important stories i've ever heard in my life. but it wasn't my story to share. i thought.

hm
thoughtrise.bsky.social
we all have different conceptions of where to draw that line

we own our stories. but a community owns its stories. and a people owns its stories. a matroshka doll of stories, of ownership.

what do we do when those rights to ownership conflict?
thoughtrise.bsky.social
it's difficult to navigate when public interest "outweighs" a person's desire for privacy

even just asking consent has the possibility of setting off panic attacks or flashbacks for weeks. there's rarely a "pure" ethical engagement

just liberties we take in the name of what we hold important
thoughtrise.bsky.social
UMMM YES

thank you for the link :D

ethics and morals are messy, messy business at the best of times

context dependent

but who gets to decide appropriate contexts?
thoughtrise.bsky.social
i don't really have an answer. i remember arguing about ethics in an anthropology classroom... anthropologists are governed by the "ethics of the board", never misrepresenting themselves or their intentions

but that can destroy the ability to get at critical truths, esp involving institutions
thoughtrise.bsky.social
journalism is important & often notable events involve victims

how do you navigate deciding what's public interest enough at the expense of undue attention? even asking permission to do the story ran the risk of triggering PTSD. who was i to do that to someone because of my own interest?

when I was finishing my anthro degree and eyeing a PhD focused on fieldwork in the Peruvian jungle, i came across an ethnography talking about how the researcher had to drink the popular “chicha” with others to be trusted in the local community

chicha is fermented spit

i suddenly had… doubts

will be interesting to see how the first waves of films that lean on genAI do & what “lessons” financiers learn

the critical mass of people aren’t engaged with the ethics around AI so it’ll be interesting to see boycotts vs “idk that film was weird and off somehow” chatter that brings ratings down
thoughtrise.bsky.social
he certainly could have phrased it differently, but i remember feeling very much this way after coming away from some conversations and being given requests for film pitch decks with AI generated stills

pitch a film with a fake AI trailer and your funding chance goes way up. it’s just true :/
