So you're saying we must have kings if we want paychecks? Yeah, buddy, you might want to read about the American revolution.

No kings no paychecks is literally one of the dumbest political slogans I have ever heard.

I think one of the biggest cleavages in our society that no one talks about is the division between those that think powerful people must be held to a higher standard than non-powerful people and those who think powerful people should be flattered and sucked up to.

There's a 73% chance Vance was a lurker.
radleybalko.bsky.social
Fascinating. Politico notes that when notified of the texts, many state-level Republicans fired or condemned these cretins. Now Vance emerges to excuse the racism, and calls the reaction to it "pearl clutching."

He seems determined to purge the party of its last enclaves of decency.
‘College Group Chat’: JD Vance Dismisses ‘Pearl Clutching’ Over Young Republicans Leak to Attack Jay Jones
Liberals hit back at Vance's blunt dismissal of racist, antisemitic and misogynistic messages leaked from a Young Republicans group chat.

Something that a lot of people either missed or have forgotten is that over the past two years there's been a massive gap between what people *intended* to communicate and how their words were heard, and that contributed to the phenomenon discussed below.

I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

in hindsight it makes sense to see cancel culture as a harbinger of the end of shame rather than an excess of it. "shame" presupposes stable social norms and a sense of what one did wrong and how it could have been avoided. not suddenly a thunderbolt from zeus thrown at random people

Also, as you get older your lenses tend to become more yellow, leading to colors getting washed out, especially once you reach your seventies. So a little bit of blue wouldn't look like enough; the hair would still look yellow. So you add a bit more until it looks right...to you.

/3 But a huge plurality, at least, of the modern GOP is of the opinion that noticing bigoted trash is more un-American and destructive than BEING bigoted trash: that dehumanizing fellow Americans based on immutable characteristics is morally superior to criticizing anyone for doing that.

Not true. If people were merely calling for a Ceasefire, they would have been agreed with, 100% by supporters of Israel, 80% of whom hate Nethanyahu.

But people were using Zionism as an epithet.

People wanted Israel to cease to exist.

And that as the LEAST of it.

Other examples exist but I do think Nuzzi is a prime candidate for the *media* figure who most exemplifies the total lack of shame in American elite culture circa 2025

It is interesting that this story came out ahead of a Supreme Court argument that is premised on the idea that Americans aren't racist any more.

Incidentally, RF2K is a *far* worse human being than Nuzzi on every conceivable metric. Including his long-documented history of infidelity to multiple partners. And again, I wouldn't care about that if he wasn't trying to murder humanity.
jkfecke.bsky.social
I don't care that Nuzzi sexted RF2K. I mean, that's disgusting, but the heart knows what it wants. I care that Nuzzi wrote articles about Biden without disclosing that she was in an intimate relationship with RF2K. That's wildly inappropriate.

It's ethics, not sluttiness, that is the issue.

Everyone in my feed is shitting on Nuzzi. Meanwhile, the other person in the saga is now destroying the medical community and endangering public health.

But let’s slut shame Nuzzi.

Polanski is the clearest example of this phenomenon, but I’m increasingly struck by how many in politics seem bereft of knowledge of their place in the history of what is, supposedly, their tradition. Staffers for Labour right MPs ignorant of Gaitskell, Tories ignorant of Tamworth, etc.
dmk1793.bsky.social
Something I find striking about Zach Polanski is how - unlike the vast majority of those who played a key role in Corbynism - his politics are so clearly not rooted in any kind of deeper analysis or intellectual tradition. It's all just a surface-level synthesis of 2010s left-wing slogans and memes.

1)You may remember the articles criticizing liberal students for their hesitancy to make friends with conservative students—alleging that they were less open-minded than their conservative counterparts.
