Internet muskox, queer person, economist & a bunch of other stuff. 40/any pronouns. Don't expect a cohesive brand from me.
Please no begging/solicitation. I'm tired and poor as fuck.
Pinned
Just to Start, since this is a member of my discipline either obfuscating the truth or forgetting it: The cost of shelter has risen much faster than the cost of the items used to measure inflation (usually a 'basket of goods')
Love the charts. I wish people were more curious about why people's lived reality doesn't match up with the charts, because nothing is more frustrating to poor people than feeling like they're being gaslit by exasperated Democrats
Everyone has utterly lost the plot about the actual material state of the economy. It's as if the last 4 years did not happen. Denial of the shape of the earth. There's really no other conclusion other than that nothing actually matters anymore. We're through the looking glass into pure vibes.

If you live in Chicago, please sign this petition to make a police oversight board (CCPSA) hold a public hearing into CPD cooperation with ICE.
Here's the full statement from the police district council members and a link to the petition

BUT BLACK DYNAMITE, I ENGAGE IN CONGRESSIONAL STOCK TRADING
A discharge petition to advance a policy ending congressional stock trading was finally moving forward when Hakeem Jeffries sucked the air out of it. By proposing his own bill that no Republican would sign, Jeffries effectively made consensus impossible. From @ddayen.bsky.social:
Jeffries Undercuts Congressional Stock Trading Ban - The American Prospect
A bipartisan solution was gaining momentum, but the House Democratic leader just issued his own bill that will prevent consensus.

Kids decide a small % of our annual giving; each kid has the same amount. We talk about how, for every issue, there is direct service, policy change, education, research, organizing, etc. We talk about what they want to do & why. We research & vet orgs for them, & they make final decisions.

In this vein: I know that giving dollars to food banks goes further, and I do that, too. But every time the kids are at the grocery store with me, they each pick something out to donate to the food bank. The tangibility of it has helped them understand. And when we have a full bag, we drop it off.

it is 'funny' that the question of 'why does everybody feel different about the economy than the way these graphs should indicate' never seems to account for 'a pandemic exposing thousands of people to our ramshackle and hyper expensive healthcare system AND killing many partners, roommates, etc'

this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

What’s really amazing about vibe-coding is how people are replacing programming languages which are strictly deterministic with human speech which is highly ambiguous and expect programming to be faster and better.

A hill on which I will die: Calvin and Hobbes is one of the great pieces of 20th-century American literature in no small part because it was never turned into anything aside from a comic strip. Leave it be.

And can we please please please retire the "Indian burial ground" jokes and tropes? I promise you that our ancestors have better things to do than haunt your ass and our (un)dead isn't what is causing all chaos in settler states. I actually talk about this in Bad Indians Book Club.

the frost players should be ashamed of themselves for voting for her. this is such a clear rehabilitation effort of her public image, and nothing about it feels sincere or genuine. the league is more concerned about one of their ‘star players’ getting booed than issuing a gender inclusion policy.

Curl being a player representative for the frost on the pwhpa is a slap in the face to all LGBTQ+ fans in this league, in particular trans people. she’s still never actually addressed/apologised for her transphobic comments & social media activity, despite claims she’s ’doing the work’.

I somehow missed that Dan Savage was on Bluesky now. If you missed the memo, consider this your reminder that Dan Savage is a racist transphobe who has allied himself with Jesse Singal (!) and written racist screeds attacking Black people while dismissing the racism of white gays.

The whole “don’t come to the hospital unless it’s a dire emergency” is exactly what happened in Chicago in 2020 and it was awful, esp for those of us who needed care. This should not keep happening. We have the technologies we need to prevent this and we aren’t using them. (Masks & air filtration.)

If you want to dive deep into settler colonialism in horror (books, movies, and video games) I have two books for you by Mohawk and Chickasaw authors.

Bloody Bodies Bloodied Landscapes by Laura Hall
Indiginomicon by Jodi Byrd <- this also gets at the settler colonialism of coding itself.

lol sorry quick addendum here on what I mean by optics:

Last few months were full of headlines of rich men abusing power to harm the most vulnerable either through policy, job cuts, or quite literally.

Folks are beginning to clock this and people are PISSED.
lol when a rich, powerful white man begs for higher taxes, you know that vibes are about to shift towards eating the rich:
Mitt Romney is in the New York Times saying we should tax the rich.
