Growing up, I recall a lot of people asking, "How could the German people let this happen?" but no one ever asked, "Would they have let if happen if they could effortlessly access detailed information about current events and history and had also been warned all their lives to not let this happen?"

Subject of Investigation: Are some Congressional Republicans Nazis
Means of Investigation: look at them
Conclusion of Investigation: yeop

Politico received an initial tip that a Taylor staffer had a swastika neatly pinned to his cubicle during a zoom call. When confronted, the congressman’s press office pretty implausibly sought to present the situation as a police matter, and Politico went along with that in its headline and lede.

Capitol Police called to investigate swastika in GOP congressional office

An American flag altered to include an image of a swastika was found in Rep. Dave Taylor’s office.

I think there are too many people on the internet who want to divide the world into neat categories of heroes and villains, and doggedly refuse to acknowledge that real human beings can be more or less villainous than their peers, or become more or less villainous over time.
rincewind.run
like I just don't think "they were always like this" is a particularly useful framing for this stuff because the GOP of Trump is meaningfully different than the GOP of Romney even if both are awful and we need to actually deal with the real world consequences of what they're becoming

a real question for the roberts majority is what in their view distinguishes jim crow disenfranchisement from majority-minority districts? a related question is what in their view made the typical jim crow law — which was facially neutral — unconstitutional?

i do firmly believe in the end, we will win, but the dread and the loss of watching this nightmare unfold is really something. These assholes are undermining everything we've taken for granted as a democratic and open society (however imperfect) with such vile hubris

Cool, man, I'm sure all the Nazis respect your seniority.

Brace for inevitable "I can't quit Twitter here's why you're a bad person for suggesting it" replies

Yeah, I'm really hoping the point isn't far off at which democratic nations decide that "America is big and has lots of money" is no longer sufficient justification for ignoring rampant human rights violations and war crimes.

I don't believe in political violence, but I do believe that as a personal matter, it would be enormously satisfying to punch Mike Johnson right in the face.
atrupar.com
Johnson: "We call it the Hate America Rally that will happen Saturday. Let's see who shows up for that. I bet you you'll see Hamas supporters, I bet you'll see antifa types, I bet you'll see Marxists on full display, people who don't want to stand and defend the foundational truths of this republic"

Progressives attitudes toward conservatism are weirdly reminiscent of how Americans used to contend with moral panic over teen sex: "Maybe if we shield people from any representation of what they're naturally thinking and feeling, they will simply stop having those thoughts and feelings!"
redoubters.bsky.social
1) Conservatism, in an ideal world, serves a role similar to that of a defense attorney, by making those who want societal change argue/demonstrate/prove that it will be beneficial, not just change for change's sake
2) Conservative people exist
3) They need a sane non-fascist party to vote for

The demand for theatrical profits strikes me as especially strange in an era when movies are routinely yanked from theaters after a run of like ten days.
mattzollerseitz.bsky.social
I genuinely do not understand why supposedly knowledgeable trade outlets keep acting like it's 1975 and the only source of revenue is theaters. A movie like this is gonna have a decades-long tail.

Remember the thousands of "guy in a diner" stories about "economic anxiety" as the main force behind MAGA-ism?

I wonder what percentage of Americans voted for Obama because they figured if we had a black president then no one would ever again accuse them of being racially insensitive or benefiting from white privilege, for as long as they live.
chadstanton.blacksky.app
This is the result of a lot of people pretending racism is one of the greatest taboos in our culture while failing to address racism substantively. People are appalled by the idea of being called racist while being totally committed to upholding racism throughout society.
uhactually.bsky.social
Every time a Democrat gets caught on tape saying like “Some Trump voters are racist” we have a national scandal and JD Vance demands an entirely new kind of apology and meanwhile every Republican group chat is like “Good morning fellow SS members. Who’s ready to respect Hitler today?”

i don’t find the emergence of strains of online leftist antisemitism particularly scary, but i do find it revealing, in that it turns out a lot of folks with “good politics” who use the “correct language” are actually dumb as fucking rocks

I sincerely hope there's a real estate/ architectural photographer somewhere running a company called "We Shoot Houses, Don't We?"
ecarney.bsky.social
Look, all I want is for the leadership of the Democratic Party to be extremely progressive, to the point of openly identifying as Marxists, and for a more conservative party to not exist in any form. Is that too much to ask???
ecarney.bsky.social
Again, I don't understand how anyone listens to this man speak in-person and never gives into the impulse to stand up and shout, "What the fuck is the matter with you?!"
